Aerial Views of the High Peaks - via tour planes

"Climbing in the Adirondacks" has a shot of the cirque, small, in B&W and taken from the air. Perhaps contacting the author would yield a source for a good print of it?

    More blazes removed in Pemi??

I'm not sure if I agree with this. Should scrambly trails be rerouted to accommodate such a standard? Blazes or not people will get lost. If concern over SAR time and resources becomes the prime determinant of backcountry management decisions we would have very different wilderness out there...

    Synthetic insulated jacket.

If I recall correctly delta compresses to a greater degree than older Polarguards and has a better insulation to weight ratio. The real question is does Delta last as long and handle repeated compressions as well as the older Polarguards..... Checking reviews of TNF sleeping bags might answer...

    Thin waterproof gloves?

I've found close fitting polypro to be much better than fleece for wet hands. I probably wear liners more than anything else on my hands. Windproof fleece has worked for the colder side of things, even when wet, though most windproof fleeces ball ice pretty readily. I think the key to both is...

    Pharaoh lake (NY) hiking conditions

I recall that a bridge of some sort was put in over the beaver marsh area at the beaver brook trailhead. Not sure where I read this but I think I read about this summer. Two years ago the bushwack trail on the eastern side of the lake was a fully marked trail.

    Worthwhile Bushwhacks

Pharaoh Lake wilderness area, follow the stream to Devils Washbin scout for route up Treadway Mnt , ascend. The further west you ascend the more direct and neater the climb, but the easier the navigation. I found that out by camping in view of Treadways cliffs. That's my favorite way of finding...

    Hking by myself

I still get the jitters from time to time even after years of solo travel. Most often it's bushwacking solo where every shadowed underlip of a rock is a potential animal den. The harder, more remote the hike, the more likely this will happen. Most recently after going off route on the approach...

Open field of summit of Panther? (Catskills)

I've had this as a destination for sometime now. I have been warned by a 3500'er that the shoulder gets ATV or snowmobile activity around hunting winter seasons. Sorry I dont remember the exact beta, it's been a while.

    Dacks input needed

Thank you. It's really important to realize this. Anyway, I would not normally provide input on a topic like this, mostly because of what the potential impact could become. But there is an area that already has attention paid towards it from the DEC and climbing community and they should...

What sleeping Bag do you prefer?

I prefer down, though I have a synthetic for kayking (oddly never used). I never gotten down wet enough to make a difference, though I have noticed the winter more weight but less bag effect to some degree. Note to down bag users: Wtex (?) makes a dry bag from a lighter coated nylon material...

    paddling Hartford's Underground River

Fred, Starchild, Numerous groups circumnavigate manhattan several times each summer. Most of them have wrapped up their season I dont know of any "open" circumnavigations happening for the rest of this year. I've been working with the Long Island City Boathouse (LICboathouse.org) which is not...

    NYC Get Together?

I'm there, but sometime after 8, my assistant at work is having his last day at work party that night.

VFTT (and Owl's Head) make the local news

If someone is to hike all the NH 4000 footers, shouldn't they have some degree of navigation skills? While I havent been caught in a whiteout I've heard enough stories of them and I've certainly seen weather tank pretty quickly. Discriminating between on trail off trail navigation is kind of...

Sneakers on the trail - crazy or am I old-fashioned?

My feet did well bushwacking to the Emmons Slide this past weekend in merrell ventilators. The Merrells did not do as well as my feet however, the right shoe just before the toe box got ripped down to the inner liner. So they are reasonable for bushwacking but a tad disposable.

Suggestions to lighten my food weight

Here's some of the lighter stuff I've brought for food: Powdered hummus (justifies bringing the olive oil) Chinese egg noodles, angle hair thin, comes in balls so it's easy to pack. Add one to three of the miso soup mixes (the ones with a foil tube of miso paste) Greatsubstitue for ramen...

    Bondcliff via. Hellgate Ravine

I've been looking at this route since my first visit to the Whites. I was told by a fellow VFTT'er that it's doable and is something of a "standard" bushwack. Truthfully I was surprised to hear that. Anyways, I gather it may be possible to find a more class 3 to low 4 route up the sides of the...

    What is "Redlining"?

I always took it for peakbagging trails in a region or area. You know, systematically walking every part of every trail in the High peaks (or wherever). If redlining is just noting where you've been, I've done that.

    How far do you drive?

Catskills in three hours or so. ADK HPs (Keene Valley exit) is about 5 hours. White are about 7. NYC traffic can add up to 2 hours to those times. A particular trailhead location can add time and a blessed few will save time (Lincoln Woods is such a great trailhead......).

    Poll - Do you bushwhack?

Since I travel with others these days more in the past I'm not off trail as much as I used to be. When I am the compromise is usually to follow a known off trail route. That said, left to my own devices trails are access routes to off trail walks and thats where my walks really begin. I start...

    Bushwhack Rating System

Wish this thread happened on a weekend or less busy week so I could track it better.... A herd path does not impact an ecosystem, for the most part. But a defined herd path does change the character of a mountain from the human point if view. I do agree that the posting of route information is...
