    West Scar Ridge

Is anyone planning a trip to West Scar - the real one - not the cannister peak, in the near future? I've signed in to the cannister, but that was two years ago, when I had no idea that the cannister might not be on the peak. Now I feel like a cheater! Can't sleep at night. . . .

Rescue crews carry out injured hiker

Update on injured Dot Blanchard from Maine. The MRI showed two ligament tears, both the ACL and MCL. The doc has her in a split and on crutches for 4-6 weeks to see if they might begin to heal, before thinking about surgery. She is going stirk crazy already. Maybe I should sponsor her for...

Rescue crews carry out injured hiker

I am trying to maintain my sanity! But, I did venture out a couple of times last year. Still need to acquire the appropriate gear.

Rescue crews carry out injured hiker

Keith, Dot and I did hike together to Owl's Head (July of 05), so that might tell you if it was, indeed, us you met! One of the things we love best about hiking is the people we meet. Nothing but the best out in the woods. I am a 'young' 59 y/o hiker, and Dot's husband is certainly glad...

Best approach to Scar Ridge East

Marc, your map is most helpful. How many years ago did you do that peak? I have found that herd paths and b/w avenues seem to ebb and flow, and close up completely in a short time. Thanks to all for the good advice. Betsy

Rescue crews carry out injured hiker

Yes, I know her, and she is really incredible. We have been hiking together off and on for about 6 years. After hiking everything in site in Maine, and the Long Trail, she decided to tackle NH at the age of 63, and we found each other on top of Eisenhower. On Monday we headed off for...

    Sandwich Dome

Chris, I have done the Dome from both sides. As I recall, the Bennett St. and Gleason Trails are a bit steeper than the WV side, but no problem at all for a fit dog. Good views as well. Betsy

Best approach to Scar Ridge East

I saw in Yogi's report of July, 07 that there are two bumps on the east side of the ridge, and two cannisters. Thanks for the picture of the correct 'jar'. If I come across a nalgene - there will be some bad word spoken aloud! But, it sure helps getting a clue as to where NOT to go. . . ...

Best approach to Scar Ridge East

Thanks for the guidance and especially for the map and trip report. That's a big huge help. I think I will need my Ovaltine for this one!

Best approach to Scar Ridge East

I have searched (the best I can) through this site and learned that the crazy ones try to traverse from Loon over West, and all the other humps in the ridge to East. Then there are the hale and hearty wacky winter hikers who head up the ridge from the Kanc near Big Rock. I took a look at this...

    Fifth time's a charm...Adams 9/29

Enjoyed your TR, and was inspired by your perseverance. A nice feeling to reach that lofty goal at last. Bravo!

Long Trail, Lincoln Gap to App Gap, 9/23

Thanks for the TR! Such fun to remember going Gap to Gap. I was lucky enough to have a spouse willing to pick me up, all smelling so sweet (NOT), at the end of a long day! True love!

    Stairs, Resolution, and Crawford traverse

By using a carspot we were able to traverse Stairs, Resolution and Crawford beginning at the end of Jericho Road on the Rocky Branch Trail, to Stairs Col Trail, and the Davis Path, with a short detour onto the Mt. Parker Trail to climb Resolution. The trip of about 11 miles included wonderful...

    Celebration on Redington

I moved to NH in 2003, retired, and thought I might like to take up hiking as a hobby. I think, at this point, maybe hiking has taken me! On my first hike to Eisenhower I met a Mainer, Dot (aka Hufflepuff), who had finished every peak with a trail in Maine, and had come over to NH to try some...

Sugarloaf and Spaulding via the AT

9/17/08 Perfect weather for a hike up two of Maine's 4,000 footers. Lots of NoBo's heading for Kahtadin. Access via the Caribou Valley Road (aka Caribou Pond Rd.) was fair to the parking lot at the AT crossing, but you need a car with good clearance. Beyond the AT CVR is passable only by...
