    Mt. Mansfield “The Chin” 2/22/06

Nice Pics. I just summited Mt Mansfield and it was good to see your shots also. The screwshoe looks goodl. I think the Stabilicer concept is solid on most conditions we have found this winter except for what you encountered on the steep and super steep. That spot is sketchy in the summer!! Climb on

    Children and crampons

I feel strongly that, with the right instruction, and a short field practice kids can handle most anything that an adult can ....short of brute strength tasks. I wouldnt practice on Osceola E Peak, but yes, Clinton or Lonesome Lake would seem to be great places to start the crampon inititation...

Cell phones in the Whites: technical question

Yes. I dont like to endorse products on this forum too strongly, but I have always gotten a signal on summits with Verizon. Even got one at Russel Pond in Baxter and on Hamlin and Katahdin. Climb on

Cell phones in the Whites: technical question

Hi, We use Verizon, several friends changed to it as their services appeard to be inferior . ie:Verizon would connect but their's would not. Just for the record I find Verizon to be not as reliable in obtaining a workable signal as it once was. Could it be the new phone antennas? Oh yes you may...

Our Suppliment Menu Most of us, the BMT used to use Cytomax. It seemed to help a bit with endurance before the onset of tightness (mostly hams) Heres our regimin for the last 3 years: Incidentally most of the below is Doctor approved and leads to increased endurance. Wake up: Slim Fast...

    experience with portable radios?

VHF and Cell Hi, As far as bailing on your cell phone: Verizon explained to me 7 years ago that the reception distance is 35 miles line of site. There is a signal on top of almost all the 4000's in NH and Vermont in winter (I have not done The Bonds or Carrigain or Jefferson,Abraham (Vt)...

    Drying polypro in winter ?

Shake the polypro dry Well...... after experimenting with the shake and freeze methods you folks mentioned for drying poly pro in the winter backcountry, I fould that shaking the polypro hard right after taking it off gets rid of about 80% of the water on the material. I then put it back on...

Hiking with a big winter sleeping bag?

Oh yes, As far as the bag is concerned. Just before you leave compress the hell out of it in a compression sack (Pretend your trying to sqeeze the truth out of an al Queda member) It'll fit in the bottom of your closed cell lined pack. Only compress for the trip and immediately fluff it after...

Hiking with a big winter sleeping bag?

closed cell pack liner After dealing with trying to find my stuff in my pack which, when not full tends, to collapse, I found a solution to the problem. Cut 1/4 inch closed cell foam in a cylindrical (or barrel)shape the same size as the inside circumference of your pack and as high as the...

    Solo hiking

"Solo" hiking requires self reliance Referencing Stan's comment:s consider it a solo hike if I find myself saying, "If I get in a jam now will anybody ever find my remains?" I feel solo hiking is a matter of self reliance. 1. If you are making all decisions about your hike (and not in a group)...

    Favorite Winter Camping Spots?

Davis Pond for it's remote feel and awesome cliffy/water scenery. Davis feels like the west's best. Desolation (GENERAL AREA) just behind or.... in front of Mt Mt Carrigain. A great trout brook for food. Spent a few days there eating trout and wacking the Pemi wilderness. Just east of Zeland...

Break-ins at Rte 302 Zealand Lot

Yes, iT'S ALMOST TO THE POINT WHERE YOU WANT TO LEAVE THE DOORS OPEN . Sorry about the caps key. Recent breakins at Abol (Baxter) and historical breakins on the Kanc (Hancock) and Clinton (Crawford Path) are really a tick off. Unfortunately this has been going on for 40 years up north. In 1971...

    El Yunque (Carribean National Forest)

Amigo Nice summit. Bueno! I climbed El Yunque early one morn in a dark mist and it was surreal. Funny how a change of environment made my sensors stand up. It was a little disconcerting not recognizing fauna/tracks/ soil/forest sounds etc. But the views of the Carib were fascinatingly beautiful.
