    I-93 crash

My wife and I decided to get a late start and go up and do Liberty. Luckily for us she decided to throw together a beef stew in the crockpot. This had us leave the house a minute or so after our planned departure. We missed the pile up (but enjoyed about an hour of waiting just north of exit...

Hiking the 4000-Footers of NH in Winter

Agree with cushtunk. Skiing under your own power up and/or down will count. Obviously no lifts allowed where available.

What are people wearing for boots right now?

As far as Tom, Field and Willey go, I hiked Saturday in my leather LL Bean Crestas with gaiters and had no issues. Saw the weather report tonight that says there may be more snow. All trails from Crawford Notch were snow covered. My wife and others were in winter boots (but much lighter than...

Avalon, Field, Willey, Tom via Avalon, Willey Range, A-Z trails

Parked at the Depot which is snow covered but packed. Room for many. Stream crossing was frozen. Blowdown on Avalon which is easy to avoid. Blowdowns on Willey Range Trail between Field and Willey will be more problematic with snow. Two dogs, both seemed to be happy. Cool coat on one...

Abandoned Mt. Eastman Trail from North Chatham

Hi Doug, The map is the 1945 topo of Chatham. The logging road that approximately follows Bradley Brook goes all the way through to Slippery Brook. This is the link to all the old topos. http://docs.unh.edu/nhtopos/nhtopos.htm Ken

Abandoned Mt. Eastman Trail from North Chatham

It might actually be a snowmobile trail (When we hiked Mtn. Pond there are trails out to the east of the pond, about that area) so maybe a local snomo map might show it. Here is a map of the trail. Bradley Brook is also not there any more but there is a logging/class 6 road in the area. We...

    Cannon/Mittersill

Read some trip reports about Mittersill trail up to Cannon being closed, and lots of construction. This is probably why. http://www.wmur.com/escape-outside/us-ski-team-to-train-at-cannons-mittersill-area/29315458

Grand Canyon & Mt Zion NP Hiking - Advice needed

Not sure when they shut them off, but on BAT they had water every 1.5miles. Last water stop was Indian Village. I know they do shut them for the "winter" but I don't know when that starts for them. If they are shut off then I would go with about 3 liters on BAT as I generally use 1L per 5...

    Sable Mtn. NHHH Finish

Came in from Evans Notch. Picked up snowmobile trail from Rollin Ridge Rd and took these to Slippery Brook Trail. Crossed the now double stream, from hurricane damage (low water but rocks were still slick). Hit the woods (mostly open) and proceeded up. Followed herd paths and hit some...

Will You Buy a NH HikeSafe Card?

Nope. With Tim, fishing license. My casting can sometimes be deemed "negligent", but I think I'm still covered.

    Hitchin' a ride...Rocky Branch (16) to Pinkham 9/13?

I would be the negative voice in this crowd. When we did Isolation on Flags on 48 in 2012 we did exactly what you are planning. I felt it would be easy to get a ride back to Pinkham. By the time we hit the parking lot many were gone and the two I asked were going the other way. I tried the...

Osceola, East Osceola, West Peak via Mt. Osceola Trail and bush whack

Plenty of parking in lot and along Tripoli Rd. Mt. Osceola trail shows wear from past hurricanes especially in the lower half. Trail got better up higher. Trail over to East Osceola was in good shape. Wasn't looking for it but we found the geocache near East. Spent some time on East talking...

NH Firetower's List Question- Monroe Hill, Fox Forest, Hillsborough

Hi John, We had the same question when we did it on Saturday (see NETC report). We did go to the top of Monroe Hill which is not in the SF and is actually someone's back yard now. From posts on here about the Fire Tower list, the view tower seems to be the "tower", though the site says Monroe...

    Mt. Moosilauke, via Benton Trail

Tunnel Brook road up to the gate closure is in great shape. There is parking for about 8 cars along the side of road near gate (sign not to block gate) OK trail for dogs but after crossing Tunnel Brook there is no water available (though there might be on trail after rain) The crossing of...

Mob scenes on the trails last weekend

Have been following this post and can agree with much that has been said here. I don't think I really mind the crowds so much as the behaviors of some members of the crowd. I have been trying to do hikes that might get me the rewards but keep clear of the crowded summits. Our last hike was up...

    Stub Hill Gate

Gate was open. Info I got (though unsubstantiated!!!) is the gates are closed from the end of snowmobile season through mud season. Roads were in good to OK shape. All roads could be done (carefully in a few spots) with a passenger car.

    Hiking "issues"

This article touches on a number of threads that are currently, or, have been recently discussed. http://www.npr.org/blogs/13.7/2014/08/14/340318201/immersion-in-nature-naturally-can-be-risky Tram/Gondola into Grand Canyon...sacriledge!? In Switzerland you can take Cable cars, Gondolas...

    Stub Hill Gate

I have been trying to find information on if the gate to Stub Hill is currently open or closed. As of July 8 it was open (NETC post). Seems to be open and closed at varying times so I'm not sure what to expect. Any info would be greatly appreciated, as we are heading up this weekend. Ken

Two Maine Hike "Elevation Gain" Inquiries

Reading on GPS may or may not be off but we did all the peaks in the range (Avery, West, South Horn and North Horn) to cover all possible lists. Same route the OP plans on doing (Up Firewardens, across ridge and down Horns Pond.
