    Dogs on the Long Trail

I have done a bunch of trips on the LT with my dog. He seems to really enjoy it. The one place that always gives us trouble is ladder ravine between Burnt Rock and Mt Ira Allen. The tall ladder provides access into and out of the ravine. We usually approach it from the south and Bogey tends...

    Vermont accomodations

Mama Bowers bed and breakfast in Richmond. Best Western in Waterbury. For camping Little River State Park in Waterbury is very nice. They have lean-tos and tent sites. Hot showers are available there and a lake for swimming.

    Vermont conditions

Just measured 12" of heavy snow on my deck in waterbury. Camel's Hump and Mansfield will be a winter wonderland this weekend. The Monroe trail receives lots of traffic so I would be confident it would be broken out by Sunday. If you try Mansfield on Monday you will have to pay more attention...

I almost got nailed by two skiers this weekend....

I Like hiking the long trail up to Mount Mansfield and the Chin in winter. The LT is very close to Stowe ski area and when the snow gets deep you will see many more skiers than hikers on the trail. The long trail is a hiking trail that sees alot of skier use in the winter. After many years...

    Foiled on Abraham(Lincoln), 1/20

I believe its called a lift ticket. I think anyone of us is within their rights to hike up sugarbush. The land is not private it is Part of the Green Mountain National Forest. Sugarbush has a lease to use our land. In my opinion you are entirely within your rights to hike up the ski trails as...

    Beechnuts and black bears

I have heard biologists also refer to them as "bear nests" and I have seen them in beech stands here in Vermont.

    Looking for ADK canoe suggestions

My favorite trips have involved a start at Blue Mountain Lake thru raquette, Forked and Long lakes. You could end in Long lake village for an easy 3 night 4 day trip or if you want to do miles go all the way to Tupper lake in 5 days. There is a 1.6 mile carry at the end of Forked Lake so...

Barefoot on the AT in Maine

I don't think I would enjoy the hundred mile wilderness barefoot in early June. I don't like bugs biting my toes. It may have been the rain or bugs or the fact that he had another 2000+ miles to go but I sense a DNF. Any reports out there that he is still on the trail?? Mike GA-->ME 87

    Black Fly Season

Just back from 3 days on the Long Trail between Route 17 and the Winooski River. Black Flies were thick and biting near Camels Hump. Had head net on while cooking dinner. Mosquitos just starting.

    Calling all Gypsy Moth Experts!!!

What you have seen is eastern forest tent caterpillar nests and yes they are usually active now waiting for foliage to emerge on their desired host plants. They love cherry trees and from your pictures it looks like they are on either choke or black cherry stems. While they can be destructive...

    Coyote Attack

In Vermont Coyotes can be hunted 365 days a year at any hour of the day as long as you have a valid hunting license. I don't think hunting is helping to control them much. The least intelligent coyotes are killed first and the smartest coyotes continue to breed and pass their crafty ways onto...

    Ethan Pond Campsite

I was thinking about spending a night at this spot this weekend. Wondering what I should expect for snow conditions. I will be hiking the AT in from 302. Will the tent platforms still be buried under snow? Thanks for any help.

Ban on hiking in VT in May?

The GMC strongly discourages hiking from April 15th till the end of memorial day weekend on the long trail system. The state of Vermont "officialy" closes trails on Camel's Hump and Mount Mansfield during the same period. Camels Hump and Mount Mansfield are mostly VT state land which gives...

    Chafing

Ouch! I too use to suffer. Carmex does the trick for me. It has even worked well for me after I have gotten severely chaffed. There is some aspirin in the product which can reduce the swelling of a really bad chafe and when you put it on the menthol and camphor hurts sooo good!
