Removal of suspension bridge in Pemi Wilderness

I understand that everyone has different skill levels and such, and I am not trying to emphasize any kind of machismo or anything, but I think the bridges in the Pemi should be removed. I mean here we have a large national forest, with trails for every skill level, and then smaller designated...

Removal of suspension bridge in Pemi Wilderness

I wouldn't mind making it a little more challenging out there by having to cross a few streams. Thats what its like out west for the most part right? I know this can cause problems for people, but I think the Pemi should be more rugged, it would give it more of a wilderness feel.

    Hiking and Fishing Remote Ponds

Well the remote ponds in the Whites have been stocked for over 50 years, people hiking into them to fish has actually reduced sig. I have been told it has to do with the newer generations, more people hike for recreation now, and less fish. That's why the Fish and Game has been selling fewer...

    Hiking and Fishing Remote Ponds

My hiking goes through a major transition about mid May through October when I change from hiking to snowy peaks, to backpacking into remote trout ponds in the Whites and camping for several days. To me there is nothing more beautiful in the Whites then a somber high elevation pond with birds...

Taking kids into Tuckerman Ravine in bad weather

It actually snowed .6 at the summit, and maybe slightly more in the ravine, but if you read todays avalanche report, you can see what the .6 did, up to 24 inch deep spots. In yesterdays avalanche report they said they thought the winds at Hermit Lake may have been higher then the summit, it can...

Taking kids into Tuckerman Ravine in bad weather

It's still winter conditions on the mountain, and I was merely stating that this isn't my first winter hike, but thanks for your insight Dr Wu...No your right, it's not K2, its only one of the most dangerous mountains in the world for weather. The point of this thread is that the kids were going...

Taking kids into Tuckerman Ravine in bad weather

Taking kids into Tuckerman Ravine in bad weather -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I just want to say that on Sunday I went into Tuckerman Ravine to ski and was blown back by how many young kids were up there, 9,10, 11 years old it seemed like. I...

    Tuckerman Ravine Trail 4/5/2009

What an incredible weather day on Sunday. Snow came through Sat and dropped snow on the west facing slopes of the Whites, but the Presidential Range blocked the moisture, so one drives up into Pinkham Notch from Gorham, and all of the Carters are mostly clear without snow, then the slopes of...

Bobcats on the rise in NE

I just contacted the Fish and Game about a dead bobcat that was hit by a car outside my apartment in Lebanon, NH. It would be good to complete this study so they can get an actual county of how many there are in NH.

    Highways in the Whites

Hillwalker did you fish the streams or ponds? Lily Pond used to be a very good trout pond before the Kanc ruined it. They let the dam out and it filled with sediments.

    Highways in the Whites

The highways in some ways are sad, yes it makes it easy to get into the mountains and just jump out of the car and hike, but it also changes the feeling of the White Mountains. Looking off Franconia Ridge to the east and you see virtually no signs of man, and then below you to the west in 93...

White Mountain National Forest Gets Stimulus Money

I don't think they could have done the Shoal Part, it's way too boggy, think about how bad that would flood in the spring, and I could only imagine maintaining those roads. Man am I glad they didn't do that. I wish the Kanc was never built either just to shoot wishes into the wind, combine the...
