    Rotating Microspikes

I've had the exact same problem. 3rd year, rotating at front of boot. Pain in the butt. I'm trying some buckle straps I bought for $5 at EMS. I only have one hike on them, so it's too early to tell. You can see the buckle on the outside of the boot in the left picture below. Microspike mod 101

Gettin' Isolated, the true Winter edition

Thx guys for the kind words. BigEarl, as far as the microspike mod goes, time will see. Have only used the straps once, and so far ok. I think conditions have a lot to do with it. Wet sticky snow, exposed roots and rocks certainly contribute the the spikes getting shifted around. They've been...

Nice pics Trish. Really like the one of Alex on Ike looking off in the distance. MadRiver is wearing a pretty interesting hat.....I think it clashes with his kilt;) Petch

Thx Tim, I think Paradox's GPS track on Wikiloc- has a better route on the bushwack. I think it brings you further towards the 5th crossing. I had loaded into my GPS as a back up, but we ended up following someone elses footprints. seeya

The Case of the Missing Microspike! 1/2/11

The same thing happened to a friend of mine (CrazyBob) this past weekend. He was coming down Chocorua with me and noticed one of his Microspikes was missing. He traveled 10 minutes back up the trail and luckily found it. When my spikes were new 2 years ago, they worked great. At the end of...

    5 days? Yeah right!

So, One has to ask......what the heck does the young Farmer eat during the hike to replenish the 10,000 calories burned? Gu's and bars of sorts or Suzie Q's and Little Debbie snacks? And in the evening, is it PBR's and Spam? I mean 10,000 calories.......that's some serious food...

GPS, Trails, Maps: A Plug for Wikiloc

I use Wikiloc as well and think it's a decent site. I have downloaded some of Paradox's tracks (accepting the disclaimer) for a few hikes that used bushwacks. I have uploaded about a dozen or so tracks as well to Wikiloc. I get an email from Wikiloc when someone has uploaded a track next to one...

    Winter Hiking Boots Recommendations

I tried on a pair of Columbia's last winter and didn't care for the fit. I wanted something that felt like a hiking boot, not a pac boot. I ended up buying some Cabela Snowrunners...

An Improvised Loop Hike in the Kilkenny (03-Dec-2010)

Great report John with some interesting detail. You certainly find some unique less traveled areas. Love the Carter Notch picture. It reminds me when I was on the Moats, and saw the notch from the opposite side. Great pics. Petch

    Passaconaway from the Kanc 12/5/2010

Passaconaway via Oliverian Brook, Passaconaway Cutoff, Square Ledge, and Walden Trails. Just a dusting of snow on the trails. Did not really accumulate with elevation gain. But, lots of ice along the Square Ledge and Walden Trails. Some ice on the upper section of the cutoff trail as well...
