Which of the 48 4k'ers would you trade?

Throw in $10.00 & you can have Zealand! My least favorite summit. Although I still need it for my Winter 4K list.

    What's in your "Fix" kit?

You've got to be kidding! Lawn Sale is an Ice Climber! He is well aware that he can't dangle from the cord. I thought this post was about quick fixes???

    Waumbek and Crampons

I'll toss in a yes vote for the crampons. That was a good flow last January, this side of Starr King. Not steep. If you don't take them, you'll need them. You know the way that works.

    Which GPS is best ?

Motabobo, You've got to be the final judge. If I'm going to get a unit with mapping capabilities, then I would go with the 60cs. due to the larger screen & better antenna. And the cs model with the compass......and after you use track up mode, you'll see why. There's something nice about...

    Keeping Crampons Sharp

If you have animals hanging onto your crampons, then your using waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much oil! The point was just a very light coating of........ suntan oil, if that's all you had, will remove the rust.

    Which GPS is best ?

Compass. From what I see, if I have mapping capability, the compass is almost mandatory. It is real handy to locate yourself when standing still and will always tell you in what direction to go. What happens when your GPS don't have it ? Do you recommend having one on a GPS. Absolutely!!!!!YES...

    Keeping Crampons Sharp

rust Hey Matt, Just wipe them down after each trip. If you forgot to or were too tired & awake to rust, just add a little light weight oil to the rag. Any oil will do, including vegetable, but the light weight ones, like sewing machine oils are best because they are less likely to stain...

The Bonds, A HELLgate of a hike, 1/28/06

Hey, nice trip!! Glad your out in one piece. Encouraging to see that people do climb the slides. Pucknuts & I were eyeing the South facing one on Hancock as we approached & departed on Sat. wondering if we would be biting off more than we could chew. How about doubling up on the good advice...

    ultralight packs--need advice!

Seems like your getting good advice already. One thing you may want to do is get 2 different packs. I use a Talus 35 from REI for dayhikes year round. It's 2950 cu. in. and it has plenty of room for all my stuff. And I carry more than the avg. dayhiker. But even that weighs 3 lbs. - 14 oz...

    Opinions of 4-point crampons

Chris Loose them! It's like driving your car with the doughnut (spare tire) on! If you want a nice alternative to 12 pt. crampons, Grivel makes an "Air Tech Lite" crampon. They weigh about 16 oz. They have shorter spikes on them (not stubs) & come with antibotts. They are not steel, so don't...

Boston's Wilderness House Under New Owners

I hope they don't change, but something tells me they will slowly phase out the climbing/camping/hiking stuff & replace it with mostly ski & kayaking stuff. They always go where the most profits are! When I first went there about 1984 to get some winter mountaineering gear, it was nice to have...

    Gear recommendations?

Bluethroatedone, A nice way to get the best of both worlds, if you will, is to wear poly gloves in a mitt shell. You can hold an ice axe, etc. a lot better than mitt in mitt. Save that combo for the very cold stuff!

Middle and South Carter Sat. 1/7

Hi Lawn Sale, Glad to have you! We haven't finalized everthing yet, but it looks like an 8:00 start. Parking at the 19 Mi. Brook trailhead parking lot on rt. 16. It's N. of Pinkham Notch. on the R. heading N. We are planning to do a short bushwhack to the S. Imp Tr. - to N. Carter Tr. - to...

    Gear recommendations?

Tom I'll anwer the glove question. Nothing I know is absolutely waterproof! If it's coated too tightly, your hands will "rot" from the inside/out from sweat. Even waterproof/breathable are no guarantee. One of my Goretex jackets lost it's water repellancy on the outer shell once and it was a...

Middle and South Carter Sat. 1/7

Hey Magic, Nothing is set in stone yet, so any imput is always welcome. My reason for the N to S version was only to keep Carter Dome as an option. If we're all doing great, why not!
