Jay, Big Jay and more - 10/23/04

Yes, we did. The bushwack to West Peak from Middle Peak is 4+ miles return and since I heard it was easier approaching from the south, I decided to save it for another time.

It would have been a perfect day if we had also bagged Gilpin... ;) :D Thanks for the beer.

    Field Kit

I've carried (and used) just about everything mentioned here but the one thing I haven't used yet is my emergency blanket. Frankly, I hope I don't have to use it.

Jay, Big Jay and more - 10/23/04

I calculated the total distance for our hike to be 12.2 miles so ... if everything goes according to plan and we still have some fuel left we "might" throw in Gilpin in the mix. Like North and Middle Jay, it's also on the NE 770 list. It's just accross the road (242) when we get back to the car...

    Beer night in Montreal

To all the VFTTers north of the border, I think we are more than overdue for a beer night. It's been almost a year since our last gathering at Jack Astor's in the West Island. I will tentatively suggest Thursday, October 21st as a date. Anyone interested? Anybody have suggestions for a good...

    Essentials for bushwhacking

Personally, I also bring a headlamp, extra clothes (gloves, socks, shirt and pants in a dry bag), extra batteries, a survival blanket and Pristine. I do tend to pack heavy (23-25 lbs) but my thinking is that there is always a remote possibility that I might be stuck overnight in the woods for...

    Jay Peak area "game plan"

I'm planning a dayhike in October to bag the following: Jay Peak - Big Jay - Middle Jay - North Jay and West Jay. I'm not familiar with the area and I'm trying to put together a game plan. The bushwacks to Big Jay and North Jay seem pretty straight forward. West Jay might be another story. At...

Part 3 of Kilimanjaro trip report 8-20-8-21

Kili in December Jim, You made the right decision. Reading your trip report sure brought back a lot of fond memories. I climbed Kili in December 2002 via the seldom used Lemosho route. We did it in 7 days and slept in the crater on the last day. From a technical and distance standpoint...
