BSP Reservations - backed up big time

This is not surprising; traffic in "outdoor activities" is way up all over the region. Another example is that local bike shops cannot get parts for routine maintenance. Many people newly "discovered" outdoor activities last year during the pandemic. For some of those folks, it will be a...

So what are you plans 3 years from today April 8th 2024

It looks like we will get a good look at this in Keene, NY, if the weather cooperates for the event. Looking directly into the sun says something else about "most of the population" but it would be unpopular to present that fact here...

Reservation System At Popular NY Trailhead

Well I guess I'm old. Here's how I remember the bus: We started hiking there in 1984. Then, the bus would pick up hikers along the road. Anyone who waved at the bus could get a ride. The hikers were few; the Club members were many. I had the distinct impression that the Club members (in...

Reservation System At Popular NY Trailhead

Mike, if this holds, by next year the Gravestone Brook path for Dial and Nippletop should be as solid as any maintained trail; no reservation needed!

    Flume Slide Rescue 3/27

Not to mention that it's an established fact that people do not pay attention to signs.

    South Baldface rescue - 3/23/2021

Also, I think a lot more people are wearing trail runners in winter, and certainly in "shoulder seasons. Easy to get those pulled off. I have seen trail runners pulled off in snow and in mud several times. Of note, wearing scree gaiters helps keep trail runners from getting pulled off.

    Redlining racist?

"Speech is violence"; "Violence is speech." "War is peace." "Freedom is slavery." "Ignorance is strength." "Every cop is a criminal, and all the killers saints." The "big deal" is marching blindly into this territory, blissfully unaware of where it leads.

    Redlining racist?

Embarrassingly childish. These people need to hike more, and open their yaps less. If they want to do something for people who have been disadvantaged, they should do something, instead of nonsensically virtue signaling. As one of my old climbing mentors said, "Do it, don't talk about it."

Proposed $5 entrance fee for Mt Washington Summit Building

In answer to an earlier question, this is exactly the behavior that I expect such fees to incentivize. It's good that the new "poop fee" is not happening, at least for now. REALLY dumb idea.

Meniscus Repair - Ever Have One?

Thanks. Yes, I do see this in more recent articles. Certainly when I was looking at this about ten years ago, the repair techniques at that time had poor success in older folks, and my ortho advised me to avoid that surgery. But as with all things medical, there has been a lot of...

Meniscus Repair - Ever Have One?

Several previous threads about this; also there is lots of research out there. Make sure you've done your homework. Is it a "repair" or a "clean up"? "Repair" of meniscus tears involves trying to suture the tear closed. It involves very long recovery times (to allow for the very slow...

    Tecumseh out, Guyot in?

That's right. >I know we all talked about this already in some earlier thread that I can't find right now. >I know there is a lot of research published about how the Marshall's came up with the list, and how it changed over some years as various people persuaded the Marshalls to make changes...

Missing Skier Found Dead In NH After Being Buried By Avalanche

Regarding the discussion of risk: Of course there is risk associated with various outdoor activities. There is risk in hiking, or simply in crossing the street. I sometimes climb rock without a rope, for example. This is an extremely high risk. If I get hurt hiking and cannot continue, I...

Missing Skier Found Dead In NH After Being Buried By Avalanche

Yes, this is a sad event. Condolences to those connected with the victim. Going alone into avy terrain is de facto being "unprepared." Yes, there are some new gizmos like floatation packs, etc., but the only real "preparation" for an avy incident is trained other members of your party to...
