Hiking pace: to go all out or not to?

I subscribe to the turtle method of hiking - slow but steady, with plenty of energy for long hikes.

3rd Annual VFTT Adirondack BBQ and Gathering August 18th thru August 21st

Since I will be hiking with Audrey and Pat for the week, I won't be able to bring any veggie or chicken quesadillas. Sorry. :( I've been trying to come up with an alternative to the beef for those out there who are vegetarians. I could make a Mexican Corn Pie and dehydrate it so I could...

In search of the Scar Ridge Holy Grail

We had a great time and were "pleasantly surprised" by the ease of this bushwack. If you go, you just have to convince HarryK to go with you. He found the herd path and we were able to pretty much stay with it to the top. Can't believe we just walked right up to the canister! We didn't do...

Here's another one - from a somewhat different perspective: "Where the Mountain Casts its Shadow: The Dark Side of Extreme Adventure" by Maria Coffey - this book examines the psychological and emotional side of extreme adventurers and that of their family members. Very interesting reading...

    Giardia Discussion

My daughter had a friend who became very ill with giardiasis during a NOLS trip to Patagonia. Due to the remoteness of their location, evacuation was not possible and she suffered till the end of the trip when she was finally able to seek medical treatment. Today her intestines are so messed...

    Heat Illness and Hiking

I agree. A few years ago a friend of mine and I were participating in an annual bicycling fund raiser in Maine and the temps on Day Two (of a 3 day event) were in the nineties with the heat coming off the pavement checking in at 108 degrees!!! We both drank a lot of water (I also tend...

Bonk if you love Moosilauke - 6/25/05

Dave: I knew what you meant, as I had "bonked" on a 180, 3-day bicycle trip last weekend. Still had 20 miles to the finish, and my mph went from slightly more than 15 to under 10!!! It's a weird feeling when it happens, the total lack of energy is overwhelming. Your mind wants to continue...

Assessing Weather Risks for a Group

Blue: I was in a situation on Memorial Day Weekend on the other end of Lafayette ridge (had hiked from Greenleaf to Little Haystack and then continued on to Liberty before returning to the hut). As I was climbing back up Little Haystack I noticed ominous clouds moving in quickly and rumbles of...

Poll: Where do you hike the most?

I mostly hike in the White Mts. just 'cause they are so close to home. I do love Maine, Vermont, and, or course the ADKs. But if I had to pick the place I WISH I could hike more - then that would be the Southwest - no contest!

Can a 46er find joy at the Grand Canyon

Our 5 day trip in the Grand Canyon mostly followed the corridor trails and we stayed at established campsite all but one night. That day, we hiked part way to Clear Creek (I want to do the whole thing some day), and camped at large beyond Sumner's Wash. That was the most amazing place and the...

Can a 46er find joy at the Grand Canyon

Since hiking in the Grand Canyon a year ago (5-day backpack) I have gone back to the Southwest two more times - in October to visit Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon, and more recently a few weeks ago to hike in Red Rocks Canyon (outside of Las Vegas) and Death Valley. These are some of the...

    Lakes of the Clouds Hut

I've stayed at Lakes several times and it is usually packed. I believe that the official capacity is 90, but I was there once in bad weather, and they managed to squeeze in about 102 people. That's crowded - particularly on a bad weather day.

    Great GOURMET Trip to Greenleaf

Seema made so much Pad Thai that it looked like we would all be eating it for the next 3 days. :D I never thought we would manage to empty the bowl. For those of you who weren't there - the bowl of Pad Thai was HUGE!!!! Beyond HUGE!!!! It was piled high in a big mixing bowl and after the...

    Please help me!

Darren: Just pledged on-line. I hope you have a sunny but not too warm day. I know what you mean about rain - I do a 3-day ride for the American Lung Association and last year it POURED on day 2. I was miserable and thinking how bad this really was and then I saw someone on a bike with an...
