Fuel quotient for a 5 day backpack?

bobmak: we did do group meals, so that probably helped a lot. But most of the meals called for 10 to 20 minutes of "simmering". In fact, one meal (the one saved for the last night) was a dehydrated Mexican Corn Pie - planned so if we did run out of fuel, we could still rehydrate the meal and...

Fuel quotient for a 5 day backpack?

Bobmak: I also learned that formula when I bought my Whisperlite. However, I used it for a five day backpack in the Grand Canyon - 4 people - and we had WAY TOO MUCH fuel. We could have done with about 1/2 the fuel we brought. And we had hot meals for breakfast and dinner (with at least 15 -...

    NH 4000 ft Awards

I was there for my award, too, although I finished several years ago. I just kept putting off writing that essay. anyway, I was kind of glad I waited 'cause I got to be there with so many VFTT-er's. It was a lot of fun. I wanted to stay for the movie - but we were getting tired (although we...

Drinking too much water on the trail?

It's not that there's necessarily a problem with drinking too much water, it's that by doing so you tend to flush out sodium and other electrolytes that are essential to the body. Hyponatremia is an abnormally low concentration of sodium in the blood. So if you drink a lot of water (too much)...

    Canister stoves on airplanes

I shipped it UPS. They don't have a problem with the stove, but you must tell them that the gas bottles have either not ever been used or have been emptied and thoroughly rinsed. Funny - I had my bag thoroughly searched when flying out to Vegas (without my stove and lantern) and it was...

    Canister stoves on airplanes

Last May we were getting ready for a trip to the Grand Canyon. Rather than take a chance (I had heard too many conflicting stories and I kept getting different answers from the airlines), I shipped my Whisperlite and empty bottles ahead. At the end of our trip, I emptied and rinsed out the gas...

    What would you do?

Here's a suggestion. Since your friend and his wife (and kids) have never gone backpacking before, why not suggest a "shake down cruise" before the "big hike" up Garfield. Suggest that this will give them a chance to figure out what to bring and how everything works on a short, easy trip...

Rainfest at the 'Loaf - 4/1-3

So... did you bring it to the ski gathering? If you had worn in on Saturday, maybe you wouldn't have gotten so wet :p Look out, though, there is another VFTT apron out there!!! :D

    Ideas for dehydrating food

I make my own fruit leather. It's really easy - just puree the fruit in a blender. If you are lazy, you can even use applesauce - I often dehydrate the flavored applesauces with great success. I also have dried leftovers and have a couple of dishes that I bake first and then dehydrate. I...

    Toughest hiking in the woild?

Actually, the hardest hike is from the car to the house after a day (or days) of hiking and a 2 to 3 hour drive back home! ;)

    4000 Footer Club Award dinner

There are many possibilities in Portsmouth, including Fat Belly's (across the street from the Brewery), or Molly Malone's, or Muddy River, or (if you want a really "interesting" experience with some local color) there's always the Daniel Street Saloon  .

    4000 Footer Club Award dinner

Well..... I finished in 2002 but never sent anything in. Finally, I wrote that essay and have submitted all my stuff - not sure if it will be processed in time for the dinner, but I'm going anyway. Too many of my friends are getting their scrolls that night - sounds like it will be a fun party.

Don't have to smell the coffee?????!!!!! That's the wonderful aroma/nector of the gods :D Decafalon (n.): The grueling event of getting through the day consuming large amounts of coffee. Thank god for coffee - otherwise, how would I get through my day??? :p

    Mountain Hardwear believer?

I have made a number of Mt. Hardware purchases - clothing and gear. My favorite clothing purchase has been my gore-tex jacket. I've owned it for 3 (?) years now and I love it. You are right, they pay a lot of attention to details. Other items include their "Canyon Shirt" with lots of mesh...

    breaking trail

Max and I broke trail back in February on our Tom - Field - Willey hike. Someone had gotten an early start up Tom, so that part of our hike was easy. The stretch between Tom and Field was unbroken and Max did the trail breaking duties - took us about an hour - but he was pretty burned out by...

    Isolation Bushwhack on 3/12 Ms. Brown's #48

Depending on road conditions, I may opt to stay home. I don't mind hiking in a snowstorm, but I'm not keen on driving in lousy conditions, which has the potential of taking a 2 1/2 hour drive into a much longer drive.

    hurting knees

The hardest part of treating that knee pain was to STOP hiking. When this happened, I was working on the NH 4K's and was planning to hike Katahdin the next month. It was so hard not to hike for 4 weeks, and the Katahdin hike was the first one after that long rest. It was a real test for me...
