    Strange experiences?

More Screams My brothers and I were camping just north of Dix Pond in the Adirondacks one spring a few years ago. We were relaxing around the fire, having a nice conversation, when we heard something like a girl scream. It rose in pitch and intensity and lasted about 4 or 5 seconds. It seemed...

    Cog Railway Parking???

We parked there to hike Washington on a Friday a few weeks back. They happily took my $5 for parking and asked that we move our car to the lower lot, but it wasn't plowed out, so we left it near the Ammo trail head. I don't think there were more than 10 cars in the lot that day, so I didn't feel...

    Altimeters & the 100 Highest

I probably did have a GPS with me, but we were not really that interested in getting an exact heading. As I recall, someone stopped on the trail and asked what "that summit off in the distance" was. Since I had my map out, I thought I would try to figure it out, but could not get the compass to...

    Moosilauke-Sarah's 48th-Ravine Lodge?

Oh, yeah - we have to make sure she is working that night! I'll be there if I can and promise to tread lightly on the summit and not take up too much space. The 30+ people who showed up for Seema's 48th certainly didn't make the mountain feel crowded for me (just the opposite), so I'm OK with...

    Altimeters & the 100 Highest

I don't know about the summit of Hale, but there certainly are formations in the Whites that will throw your compass off. Coming down the Liberty Springs trail, we took out a compass to try to figure out what mountain we were looking at off in the distance. We knew we were generally facing west...

    Presidential Range Question(s)

I have heard the LOC hiker's refuge often described as a dark, dank, smelly place. We stopped there this past winter on our way to Washington and can confirm that all the negative adjectives used to describe this spot are true. Even at 6 degrees with a stiff wind howling past the open door, the...

    Preventing snowballing on snowshoe crampons

Do they make these for snow shoes? I've seen them for crampons. Being a frugal hiker, I tie wrapped pieces of a plastic milk jug to the bottoms of my crampons. I haven't been out in the worst, sticky snow conditions, but the field tests I did on my front lawn during a thaw were encouraging. I...

    Glissading spots on Mount Washington

Ammo side I don't know if you are limiting your question to the east side of Washington, but there is a good section of the Ammonoosuc trail that might be good for butt sliding given the right conditions. Descending from the LOC hut, the steepest section starts at the 4200 foot level just after...

    New hiking poles?

I don't leave home without 'em Go for it. I had real problems with my knees until I started using poles. I have 3-piece twist lock poles. I've only had one accidentally collapse on my once, but if I was replacing them, I would go for something like the Flicklock which would be easier to lock if...

Snowshoes MUST be worn in Dacks

I don't think there are specific laws that require you to carry snow shoes for this hike, but if you have to bail out from the ridge, you will have one heck of a time getting out of the woods without snow shoes. If you require rescue, you could be charged for the rescue for being ill equipped...

    Adirondack Maps

I got mine at the Mountaineer in Keene. It was a few years ago, but you could check with them.

Need show shoes from LOC Hut to Washington?

Darn! You know - Show shoes are snow shoes strapped to you pack just to give the impression that you are an experienced, well-equipped hiker! :o And I can't even edit the thread title to fix my typo! Oh, well. At least 'h' and 'n' look similar as well as being close to each other on the...

Measuring the how steep a slope is.

Capt, I think the last time this was discussed (here), the consensus was that slope is expressed in degrees and grade in percentage.

Need show shoes from LOC Hut to Washington?

Need snow shoes from LOC Hut to Washington? On Friday, we are hiking Ammo trail from Cog station to Lake of Clouds Hut and then to Washington (plus Monroe on way down). Since the trail from LOC to Washington is all above treeline, would it be safe to ditch my snow shoes at hut for hike to...

    I need a plan "B" ... Suggestions???

We hiked up Osseo to Flume and Liberty and down LS trail in winter. You can go other direction, but the bottom part of Osseo and the Wilderness trail to the Kanc is really flat and boring. My preference is to do that part at the start of the trip vs the end. but that's just my preference. If...

    crampons or snowshoes

Unfortunately, it's more likely that the person hiking the trail the next day over your frozen postholes will be the one who gets hurt, not you. Try hiking after a fresh snow has bridged over all your frozen postholes. You can't see them even if you are paying attention. It's like walking on a...

    3/19: Carter Dome or Wildcats?

Is anyone hiking up the Wildcat Ridge trail from Glen Ellis Falls parking area? I'm not thrilled with hiking up the ski trail (although I am guaranteed that the trail will be packed out). I was considering bringing a sled for a quick descent down the ski trail. Wildcat ski patrol said I should...

    3/19: Carter Dome or Wildcats?

I don't know if you saw this, but as of 13 Mar, the trail up to Wildcat A was not broken.

Measuring the how steep a slope is.

True, however for all of the mountains in the Northeast, the down slope to the true horizon is about 0.5 degrees (if I remember my trig correctly) which you would have to add to your initial 10 degree fist measurement. Like I said, it's only an estimate.

    3/19: Carter Dome or Wildcats?

I'll do the Wildcats, but my ski boots are shot. Is anyone hiking or will skis be the popular mode of transportation?
