lightweight solo canoes - paddles and PFDs?

Unfortunately, don't have anything of value to say for the benefit of the OP, as i'm a big fan of the 16-17 foot, general purpose, symmetrical, ABS open canoe, even as a solo canoe. I like the trade-offs one makes with big solo canoes, and find that my 16' 6" Mad River Explorer gets far more...

Cinco de Paddle, Concord River 5/5

Thanks to Stev-o for organizing the event and to DougPaul for the fine write-up of the evening's paddle. The warm temperature and lack of a headwind made for some very pleasant flatwater paddling on a pretty stretch of river. Its always good meeting new paddlers and VFTT posters. Well worth the...

Cinco de Paddle, Concord River 5/5

Wednesday May 7th works, but 5pm might be difficult due to a 3:45 doctor's appointment. Should easily be there by 5:15 to 5:30, though. Thanks.

Cinco de Paddle, Concord River 5/5

Interested as well, if canoes are welcome. The 7th/8th dates are better, but the 6th could work. marshall

    Greenland Paddle Class@ Jersey Shore...

Caleb Davis Video A low budget option, if you can't make it to a class and particularly if you have the woodworking tools, is to purchase a video and make the GP paddle on your own. A video, such as the one titled "Welcome to Making Traditionally Shaped Canoe and Greenland Kayak Paddles with...

    Amazing Camping Food?

Great to hear of young scouts experiencing the joys of traditional cooking over a campfire. The "thick and sweet wild blueberry pies" part sounds pretty good too!

    Amazing Camping Food?

Pesto Pizza link (sorry about the low resolution). I'm sure the real cooks out there could do a better job, but this particular pizza turned out to be very edible. :) Twiggy fire link. Yes, coals are good to use with a dutch oven, but a small stick fire (or logs spit into small pieces) works...

    Amazing Camping Food?

Pizza Dutch ovens are great for this. Trust me, if i can do it, it can't be very difficult. Use the twiggy fire method as described above. Just be prepared for a possible feeding frenzy if you are not alone. marshall

    Amazing Camping Food?

Dutch Ovens and Bannock Chinooktrail, Dutch Ovens are not only great for car camping, but also allow you to eliminate the gas stove on longer canoe or kayak trips through country were fires are permitted and wood is readily available. I own what is called a Banks Fry-Bake Oven which is a...

Mt. Manadnock Ski Tour to Gilson Pond, 2/23/08

Trail Conditions: XC ski trail (route 13, 14, 18, 27, 23, 28 to Birchcroft Tr.) was unbroken to Birchcroft with about 6", maybe less, of new fresh powder. Brooks generally open and a number of wet spots on the trail that were easily avoided. Special Equipment Required: Light BC skis (Madshus...

Paddling in the Great North Woods

I'll second Scott Bog as a fine paddling side trip in the Connecticut Lakes region. A friend and i tried to access Scott Bog by canoe by traveling up Scott Brook, via Second Connecticut Lake, but low water caused us to turn around not far from our destination. Believe that we might have made...

    Moose River Bow Trip

Very Scenic Trip SherpaKroto, i've done the full loop trip a couple of times in the fall season and in 2005 did the Spencer Rips (Moose River) to Attean Lake section of the Bow Trip as part of a longer NFCT section trip (started at western end of Flagstaff Lake) with Tramper Al, who i believe...

    Lake Richardson etc..

Carry "Road" Good comment on your part about the condition of Carry Road! You are correct in that the road was actually rougher than the pictures suggested. The combination of net elevation gain (about 200 feet) coupled with some large rocks on a number of the hills resulted in the portage...

    Lake Richardson etc..

Should be a fine trip! Spider Solo, 5 to 7 days to explore the Richardson Lakes, Mooselookmeguntic and Rangeley Lakes is not too much time, IMHO. In fact, last October (2006) I did a similar trip, where I started in Errol, NH (Androscoggin River) and paddled to Rangeley, ME (northeastern corner...

    Views from the Bow??

Just adds to the ambience of this section of the 'Nash Artillery? Wow! Surprised the ground doesn't shake out where I live in north central MA! Last November, we put in on the Nashua R at Still River Depot Road, and we could very clearly hear the sound of machine guns in the distance...

    Views from the Bow??

More Nashua R beta Rick, I'm not the best person to be talking about the suitability of touring kayaks for paddling on the Nashua River, given that I've got open canoe blood pouring through my veins. What I will say is that the farther upstream you get on the North Nashua in Lancaster (MA) and...

    Views from the Bow??

Hey Spencer, Sounds like you know the area much better than I do! I've only been out there once, a couple of years ago. Actually, during mid-summer in low water, and I had some real problems finding the E Branch of the Tully River in that marshy section at the end of Long Pond. So didn't end up...

    Views from the Bow??

Rick, I generally prefer moving water but below are some nice flatwater day tours in MA that I've done in the past that are somewhat similar to the Washacum lakes that you recently paddled. Each of the below places to flatwater paddle have undeveloped shorelines for the most part, but might be...

    Catamount Trail sections 6 & 7, Mar 26 2005

Actually, not a great lover of klister El-bagr, actually, I was being quite tongue-in-cheek about the klister. It has been a number of years since I last used it and clearly made a number of mistakes in its application. In jury-rigging the boot/binding with duct tape, Tramper Al did about the...

    Catamount Trail sections 6 & 7, Mar 26 2005

Klister anyone? What an awesome day that we had on the Catamount Trail on Saturday! I simply had a blast. Totally enjoyed the ski tour with Tramper Al, MichaelJ and Meri. Nice pictures and trip report, MichaelJ. Sorry, that I didn't take any pictures to contribute, but my hands were somewhat...
