SS's post made me think of posting this if anybody else wants to join me, I'm considering taking this class:

Check June 28th, and also a link to the class itself

http://www.tuktupaddles.com/Schedule.htm

on making one, $125 (I'm looking into a JSSKA discount as we speak) and includes the cedar 2x4 and some tools (you provide a planar, workhorse and clamp), and optional tools like a spoke shave, an electric sander, some more i didn't mention that's on the website.

It's a saturday and I would consider car camping somewhere (I don't think there are backcountry campsites on barnaget bay) and then perhaps paddling on sunday too.

Caleb Davis Video

A low budget option, if you can't make it to a class and particularly if you have the woodworking tools, is to purchase a video and make the GP paddle on your own. A video, such as the one titled "Welcome to Making Traditionally Shaped Canoe and Greenland Kayak Paddles with Caleb Davis" is nice to have as you can refer back to it when needed.

With just marginal woodworking skills, I'm currently building canoe paddle #4. If you build your own, you can really customize the paddle (ie. shave it down to get the desired flex) to your liking.

I think the only state park in the area to camp is Brendan Byrne State Park. This would be south of Cattus Island toward Long Beach Island. It supposed to be nice kayaking off of Island Beach State Park which is by Toms River. During the season you need to get there early because the parking lots fill up. Not sure if Brendan Byrne is on the NJ closure list. Island beach is not.
