    Poll: Blaze Removal in Wilderness

I'll take another kick at the deceased nag: I just really don't understand why everyone gets so crazy about wilderness regulations. That's what the forest service does, they manage lands for multiple uses, one of which is wilderness. Why is it so unreasonable to have some wilderness? It's...

    Ticks are out.

Lyme Disease Info For anyone who is interested. The current edition of Yankee Magazine has what I consider to be the best article yet on Lyme disease. There is still a great deal of disaggreement in the MD community on how to treat this disease. What was really interesting in this article, is...

Selfish egomaniacs destroy fragile habitat on Katahdin.

This may not be over. The authorities in Maine are very serious about protecting that Park. Also, I'm sure, as soon as the word gets out, the Park authorities may have a little egg on their face. Whoever did this will obviously be crowing about it to anyone and everyone who will listen. If the...

Your favorite places to swim in franconia NOtch area

If you are headed into Lincoln, try The Ladies Bathtub. Its a deep hole in the Pemi. Beautiful water with public parking. Take Rt. 112 toward Loon, just before the mountain turn right on West Branch Road and follow around to the right. The parking is straight ahead and a path leads down to the...

    Do partridges "bark"

What you most probubly came across were three Spruce Grouse. Partidge are extremely wary and shy, unless you are very close to their nest. Spruce Grouse are not at all afraid of humans and have been known to curiously follow hikers for some distance. They also make some very strange sounds.

Where to grab breakfast on the road...

Two: The King's Corner on Rt. 112 in Lincoln. Excellent expresso and the hiker breakfast is cheap and good. The Sunny Day Diner on Rt.3, also in Lincoln (if they're open). Try the banana bread french toast. Mind blowing.

    Katahdin area and kids

One idea I would recommend would be the Pamola Caves. Great fun for kids. Take the Chimney Pond trail out of Roaring Brook, then start up the Dudley Trail. The path to the caves leaves to the left within 1/2 mile of the start. This will also give you a good read on how well your son is handling...

    Wildflower Hike Suggestions?

My suggestion is the Caps Ridge Trail to Gulfside. Then through Monticello lawn and on to the Clay Loop. Ive done this many times. This time of year I want out of the woods ASAP to beat the flies. Anyway, I have always seen quite a few Lady Slippers on the Caps Trail and the Lawn can be...

    Summer sleeping bag

EMS Velocity I use an EMS Velocity 35. I really like it because: A: Good value, $180 B: Extremely light, 18 oz. C: Stuff size, it stuffs to 5x9 with the compression sack. The only item I don't like is the half zipper, but they are looking to shave grams in their design. A few weeks ago I slept...

    Baxter Tentsites

I go to Roaring Brook every Sept. The tent sites are actually quite large. I don't think you'll have much trouble pitching a six. The sites are open and flat, especially the walk in sites which are huge. Hope this helps, don't miss Sandy Stream Pond at dusk, its Moose time.

    Solo tents

I'm in the market for a solo three season tent. Does anyone have any experience or an opinion about the MSR Hubba, Marmot EOS 1P or the Big Agnes Seedhouse SL1 ? Most of my warm weather hiking tends to be solo and I've tried the bivi option and want a little more room. Thanks for any and all help.

    Gatorade question

One thing not to try is putting Gatorade in your Camelback. My first and last try led to discovering an interesting growth a week later. This was after washing out the bladder. On long trips I usually carry the powdered version and use it at the end of the day as a recovery drink.

Does anyone know of any hikes that include a ghost town?

If you hike the Bigelow Range in Maine, from any of the summits, you look down on Flagstaff Lake. There are a number of ghost towns flooded under this man made lake. The really neat thing is, if you canoe or kayak the lake on a very still day, you can look down and still see some of the structures.

    Got fish?

Another thing to keep in mind. Wild northern fish, especially trout have amazing camo ability. They may very well be there, you just can't see them. Try looking patiently sometime with polarized sunglasses. After a while you may see movement or a shape.

USFS Fee ruled illegal in AZ

Living in Ri, taxes and fees are unfortunately a major portion of everyday life. I have to admit that one of the reasons I spend so much time in NH is my attitude changes just by being in a State that takes such a different attitude to taking it's citizens money. I've always paid the parking...

    Snow Amounts update please?

I just finished skiing the Wilderness Trail from Lincoln woods out to Franconia Falls. Maybe 4" of heavy snow. Not as much as I was hoping for.
