    The SUMMER flower thread

Wow! An innane comment from a layman, but flower identication (and any scientific plant identification, for that matter) requires precise and sometimes very subtle powers of observation, doesn't it :D ! I had to check back and forth several times amongst the photos to note the differences you...

    The SUMMER flower thread

Thanks arghman, Dick and Bob- I had guessed at some sort of hibiscus when we first saw them but these were so dramatic. I've never seen any this size before. Edelweiss

Grand Gulch (Utah): An Archeological Quest (9/16-9/23/08)

DAY 1: We had been looking forward to this backpacking/touring trip for months. Dick made the difficult decision to stay home as our departure date approached to insure that his back would continue to improve after several months of recovery from painful sciatica. I decided to go with our...

    The SUMMER flower thread

Identify This Indiana Flower? We just got back from a trip to Indiana and hiked in Brown County State Park (south of Indianapolis). I found this flower in a marsh area next to a lake. It's huge, perhaps 6-8 inches across. Any ideas what it is...

Cradle Rock Ridge (Cat100) 8/13/08 One more to go

A relaxing day with a few tricky spots on the way back (but then there wouldn't be anything to talk about)! I would love to come back with Hornbecks to camp and paddle the lake. Alder Lake is a beautiful spot. The mansion is slowly deteriorating - testament to a by-gone era of opulence and...

    Olderbark Mt. Hike 8-1-08

Alan, Bookah and I arrived at the Mink Hollow trailhead at approximately 8:30 a.m. Weather was predicted to be clear with a 20% possibility of afternoon showers and temps in the mid 70's. We started on the Mink Hollow Trail which passed by several camps as it followed a stream - I'm guessing the...

Balsam Lake Mt - Woodpecker Ridge - Mill Brook Ridge 7-26-08

Yesterday was a challenging day for me, particularly the last several hours as we bushwhacked down from Mill Brook Ridge Mt. to our waiting car on Mill Brook Rd. Going into overdrive, as is sometimes necessary when hiking a long distance on a trail, didn't apply here. The uneven terrain...

    Hermit's Frog

Hermit asked me to post a photo of a frog he took in the Catskills. Any idea as to species?

    Wildcats (Catskill 100 Highest) 7-10-08

The hemlock forest seemed to appear out of nowhere - a respite from the whacking and uneven terrain of the previous hour - definitely a highlight of the trip! 87/102 http://www.kodakgallery.com/Slideshow.jsp?mode=fromshare&Uc=tdpb2qu.2goi1yjm&Uy=jn55m&Ux=0&UV=275332680624_259617658306

Beaver Kill Range and High Falls Ridge 6/2/08 (Cat100 peaks)

The "orchard" of ferns below the summit Beaver Kill Ridge was as spectacular as Alan described. Here are a few more photos of the day. http://www.kodakgallery.com/Slideshow.jsp?mode=fromshare&Uc=tdpb2qu.bm1hfo7e&Uy=-p2j9sv&Ux=0&UV=305710800462_516006767306

    S. Plattekill (AGAIN) and N. Plattekill Mts. (Catskills)

Alan, Bookah and I set out for the Plattekills yesterday morning. We decided to bring two cars (big decision because of recent heftier gas prices). We left one at the ski resort with permission from an employee who said he would watch the car, and the second on the height of land on New...

    Utah Gulches TR : March 6-18, '08

I was very interested in seeing your superb photos of Buckskin Gulch, since we backpacked into BG last year, in mid May. We also started at the Wire Pass trailhead but continued to White House by way of Paria Canyon. We encountered fewer and more shallow water pools than your group and were...

To All Paddlers: How do you protect your camera?

Thanks to everyone for your thoughtful replies. Yes, I need to make the decision as to how much I am willing to risk damage to my DSLR camera and lenses. I just brought home a Hornbeck 10'5" solo canoe. The plan is to paddle on quiet ponds, lakes and bogs but, even so, it only takes one slip...

To All Paddlers: How do you protect your camera?

I should have mentioned that I want to take my larger Canon XTi DSLR with lenses - the one I will probably use the most is a 17-85 mm lens but I would also like to bring along a longer 70-210 mm lens which will probably stay protected in a Lowepro front-load case. I would love to be able to...

To All Paddlers: How do you protect your camera?

We are in the process of purchasing two solo canoes for calm water/back country paddling. How do the paddlers on VFTT protect your camera equipment but allow for easy accesss for those wildlife shots you just HAVE TO record for posterity. Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

5-13-08 Hodge Pond Mt - why go the regular way? (Cat100 peak)

Aside from the swarms of black flies and some tricky negotiation of marsh and thick vegetation near the road, this was a hike full of pleasant surprises, as Alan related in his TR. Without time constraints (and black flies), it would be nice to go back and dawdle in these beautiful open woods...
