Its been a long and fun journey. Bookah, Jo and I whacked Cradle Rock today.
First time to Alder Lake. If you haven't been to the lake or area before, you're missing a treat. The site of an old mansion, beautiful lake and surrounded by CHH peaks.
The lake is ideal for paddling, has brook trout in it's cold waters and a population of otters. We heard we just missed 3 fawns gamboling around near the water just before we got there.
Took the trail around the lake, jumped in the woods from the Millbrook Ridge Trail. Nice open woods but the deep ferns everywhere made the footing a little tricky.
The summit is gorgeous, large birch and beech trees and the entire ridge crowned by ferns.
I suggested a different descent route, taking CRR's NW ridge down. This would be a phenomenal route when the ferns are missing, but they hid lots of rocks which made the down slower than we'd like.
While it wasn't hot, it was humid and Bookah had jets on all day, playing cat and mouse with whatever small critters lurked in the world at the base of the ferns. She deigned to take a brief swim in Alder Lake before juming in the car for her usual drive-home snooze.
This was 101 / 102 for the pooch and I. Weather and luck permitting, 102/102 coming on Labor Day weekend on Stoppel Point.
