Its been a long and fun journey. Bookah, Jo and I whacked Cradle Rock today.
First time to Alder Lake. If you haven't been to the lake or area before, you're missing a treat. The site of an old mansion, beautiful lake and surrounded by CHH peaks.
The lake is ideal for paddling, has brook trout in it's cold waters and a population of otters. We heard we just missed 3 fawns gamboling around near the water just before we got there.
Took the trail around the lake, jumped in the woods from the Millbrook Ridge Trail. Nice open woods but the deep ferns everywhere made the footing a little tricky.
The summit is gorgeous, large birch and beech trees and the entire ridge crowned by ferns.
I suggested a different descent route, taking CRR's NW ridge down. This would be a phenomenal route when the ferns are missing, but they hid lots of rocks which made the down slower than we'd like.
While it wasn't hot, it was humid and Bookah had jets on all day, playing cat and mouse with whatever small critters lurked in the world at the base of the ferns. She deigned to take a brief swim in Alder Lake before juming in the car for her usual drive-home snooze.
This was 101 / 102 for the pooch and I. Weather and luck permitting, 102/102 coming on Labor Day weekend on Stoppel Point.

Excellent trip, Peakbagr. Sounds like a very cool and special place. Good luck on finishing them on Labor Day :D. What an amazing accomplishment that will be

Best regards,
Marty

A relaxing day with a few tricky spots on the way back (but then there wouldn't be anything to talk about)! I would love to come back with Hornbecks to camp and paddle the lake. Alder Lake is a beautiful spot. The mansion is slowly deteriorating - testament to a by-gone era of opulence and privilege.
Congratulations to Alan on 101/102. Hope many will join us on Stoppel to celebrate his and Bookah's CHH 102!

The Coykendall mansion is impressive. Sitting on a lawn looking over Alder Lake. What a place it must have been in its glory days.
I was told by a local who lives nearby that DEC intends to demolish it as its falling down in places.
If only NYS had the money to restore this like one of the great camps in the ADKs. They would have to improve parts of Cross Mt road though.
Does anyone think a campaign could be made to save it?
