    Rescues - East vs. West

Hmm... I've seen plenty of condemnation of climbers on Hood or Rainier. Here's the latest: http://www.komonews.com/news/local/97679934.html

    Deet Ate My GPS!!!

Sheesh! From what I recall, the 100% deet (which I think is actually 98% DEET) says on the spray to only use on clothing or objects, not directly on skin. The skin "safe" ones are generally <30% DEET.

    Mapsource-Vertical Profile?

I'm not sure if you can do that with Mapsource but if you have a PC you might be fine doing an ALT+PrintScrn and pasting the screen capture into a graphics program.

kautz route on rainier conditions vs Ing Direct or DC ?

Dr., good choice! Long Beach is a gorgeous area and the weather is just perfect and warm, like it hasn't been in a long time. Enjoy it!! I'm actually taking my visiting cousin today up to Paradise to check out the big hill up close. Maybe I'll see some vftters? :)

kautz route on rainier conditions vs Ing Direct or DC ?

Ok, yeah, makes more sense. At least his trip up will be Monday on. It looks like the temps are dropping again and no major precip predicted, so good - nice consolidation over the weekend and then a nice freeze. Good luck to them both :)

kautz route on rainier conditions vs Ing Direct or DC ?

Is there somewhere posting a specific warning on the Ingraham side? http://www.atmos.washington.edu/data/rainier_report.html Both routes reach steepness that could slide. This is not a great weekend to be up there. Freezing levels have been under 6000' for a while and it's been snowing up...

    Proposed Mt. Greylock Resort

Good point. Just yesterday I was talking to someone about the current state of development and she brought up the CCC and how great for the people and for the development of the country that program was. I'm sure there must be some here who enjoy CCC trails, right?

Avalance on Mt Ranier Hiker missing

Stats and things get a little confusing when you throw in avalanches and crevasses together. IMO, I think being pushed into a crevasse by an avy would be completely different logistically than if you were to fall into one while walking on a glacier. While climbing you and your partner can surely...

Avalance on Mt Ranier Hiker missing

The pic looks to be of the correct location of the descriptions, with Gibraltar rock in the background and the DC in the foreground. Ingraham in between with the avalanche looking to be starting in line with the top of the DC and Gib rock, so ~12.5', where they claimed the climbers were when the...

Avalance on Mt Ranier Hiker missing

Ugh, not much hope for the missing climber. It's been dumping rain in Seattle for the last weeks, it's not Summer yet at all, lots of new snow up there. Not many climbing trip reports being posted for a good reason. It's very sad.

    Good kayak for overnight trips

Any kayak can work for most anything. Paddling skill, general fitness, and mindframe have a lot to do with what you can do with a kayak. I've seen kayaks get rolled where people have claimed that "you can't roll that kayak". The ones you listed should do you just fine. With every kayak there...

USFS considering fees for some CO 14ers

I'm not sure but they still do it. The day pass is $5. Honestly, I don't see the harm of attracting one or two-timers into trail maintenance, these aka. "something-for-nothing"s. Would the trail crews rather just not have the numbers? You figure that if someone is looking to get a free pass...

USFS considering fees for some CO 14ers

An acquaintance over here in WA did just that. WTA (Washington Trails Association) offers: 1st & 2nd work parties: Earn a day or annual Northwest Forest Pass (on Forest Service projects - indicated in the Free Pass column of the schedule). The NW Forest Pass is required in many areas out here...

Petzl Reverso 3 vs. Black Diamond ATC Guide

I had and used the Guide before dropping it on a route. Now I have a bright green (matches my jacket) Reverso3. On a subjective point from what I remember it seemed like the Guide was stickier. Currently it is tough to feed my 10.2mm rope through the R3. Although it's been a while since I used...
