Off season camping in DEC Campgrounds?

During hunting season, hunters are allowed to camp at them.

    Biking up Whiteface Memorial Highway

Sigh..... And these things get posted, questioned, and more popular, and it moves from the gray area to the NOT ALLOWED. Net discussion of gray area things has led to a number of not allowed in the area. Within a year, we'll be seeing a sign there clearly stating that it is not allowed.

    Biking up Whiteface Memorial Highway

Note that a number of things which were officially allowed, but tolerated started getting much more strict enforcement once it was posted someplace on the net that it can be done under certain conditions. If there is something which is not allowed, but sometimes tolerated, it is not a good idea...

    Biking up Whiteface Memorial Highway

Call "High Peaks Cyclery" in Lake Placid. The guys there would know for sure.

    MacNaoughton from Upper Works

I have only two words to say about that route: "Thick!"

    Joshua Tree National Park?

Joshua Tree is my favorite place for nude hiking. Get a good map, ride around pick out a peak which looks interesting, and climb up it. Trails are not really needed. You'll have the whole peak to yourself.

    I need a good hat

I'm a three hatter as well. The main hat is a toque, similar to the Swix thing. I like it because it's quite thin... thin enough to fit under a bike helmet (which is no use in the mountains) Then, when it gets colder, I have an old, polypro cagoule (are they called baklava in English?) which...

    Wilderness First Aid Book Recommendation?

Wilkerson is a classic. It covers lots. He doesn't even shy away from removal of impacted stools and dealing with the dead body. It's much more (as its name implies) than a first aid. First aid is what you do until help arrives. Wilkerson covers what to do when help is many many days away.

Is Yard Mtn a 4000 footer?

It all depends on the rules you use. I have my own list, which has NY's 37 peaks over 5,000 feet. Most of them are unnamed. My rules are a 17 foot rise and a distance of 50 feet. Anyone want to join the Adirondack 37ers?

Get yer butt out there -- Blue Moon this month

I think it was 11 years ago... My son and I accompanied a friend who finished his full moon 46, on the summit of Whiteface as the new year came in. Taking a kid to the summit of Whiteface under a full moon to see the new year come in, is something he'll remember for his life.

    Wooden Ski Classic

Wait a second. I still use cable bindings. They're out of date? THey still work. I haven't used them this year yet (not enough snow around here), but last year I did.

Why do you (or don't you) hile solo?

Hmmm.. I've never thought about safety... as in, "I don't want to do this hike alone, I'd better do it with someone." Anything I'd do with someone, I'd do alone. Now... if there is a hike requiring more logistics than usual... such as Baxter... Grand Canyon... I'll find a partner who will do...

    Wooden Ski Classic

Great. I think I'll get some and put it on my bedside table so that I'll dream of my younger days....Next you're gonna tell that it has been found to cause cancer in rats, right?

    Wooden Ski Classic

I still have my knickers, although I haven't worn them in a while. I don't think I have socks to go with them, though. Mmmmmmm... The smell of the pine tar. Now that is something I miss.

Why do you (or don't you) hile solo?

Most of my hiking is alone. 40-something years ago, I backpacked alone because nobody wanted to go with me. These days, I hike alone because... well, I'm unsociable. I just don't like people.

    Sherpa snowshoe decking material?

Several years ago, I wanted to do some repairs to mine. I brought the snowshoes into every fabric store I could find around here and couldn't find anything similar. I ended up getting a bit of nylon webbing and riveting this to the decking. A strip above and a strip below.

    Plantar Fasciitis

Another one to say long time healing. First time it wasn't bad, but the second time I didn't take care of it at first... it got worse and lasted a good 8 months. A friend had great success with acupuncture. I got those things I can't spell (begin with O) that you put in your shoes.

And the..."I don't have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun YOU."

    Camping stove accidents

I think I'm worried. 40 years and I've never had an accident. I guess that means I'm due for a big one? Of course, my Svea flames up like crazy when I'm priming it, but that's SOP.

    Rescuers fear "Yuppie 911"

Don't know what I'd do, as I refuse to own a cell phone... But then, I was hiking for 30 years before cell phones existed... Back then, EVERYONE hiked without a cell phone.
