Weekend in the DAX - Where was everyone?

We would have loved to do some more hiking, but due to my wife’s family being with us, we were limited. I fished every morning on the Ausable. We drove the family up Whiteface, there's still some snow up there as well, walked back to the base of Roaring Brook, had a picnic at Cascade Lakes, and...

    Rock Climbing questions

I Agree with Sierra I agree with Sierra, I learned the same way, by reading and applying what I had read. Then eventually started meeting better climbers in the same circles, and then found a few partners that could always use a belay slave. :D I also used to go to the easier local crags or...

    Winter 46er list

I look at it this way. If I'm part of a strong trail breaking party, I might not even bother to look for any trail reports after a fresh dump. The plan is to head for a certain peak, and do our best, regardless of how difficult it is. These hikes tend to be more gratifying for me. For all...

    Winter 46er list

I think the big advantage we have now is the internet. Knowing what's busted out, and the conditions, makes it easier to get the longer less traveled peaks in winter. No doubt about it though, it's still no easy task, it's the Adirondacks! :D

    Most Challenging Mountaineering Routes

Ratings Jim, Your asking a question on a very debatable subject. ;) This may help you out. http://www.arareko.net/climbing/ratings.html http://neice.com/eguide/Ratings.htm In the Northeast some use a system (NEI) instead of (WI) developed by Rick Wilcox and Peter Cole in their New England...

    Dix Range Snow Conditions

Na, never used ropes on it. But we have had to stay in the scrub/tree line to avoid avalanche danger before. A rope might be useful on some of the steeper sections if ice is a factor. Especially on the return down the slide. Like you said about slinging trees, just stay near the edge of the...

    Dix Range Snow Conditions

Sorry I can't help with current conditions, but I've been up the slide a few times in winter, and every time it was a tough, slow, snow slog every time. You know, the three steps forward in loose snow to gain about a foot. Just wondering if you plan on going in on the South Fork? I thought the...

    Ice Climbing

Way to go Shadow! You may be hooked now. Sorry to hear about your Mom though. :( My Grandmother was just diagnosed with it as well this week. She has never smoked, always kept in very good shape, and has been a vegetarian for more than 50 years. Go figure?

    Trap Dike

I've heard of people skiing the slides down farther towards Lake Colden camping area. These would be the slides you would see after gaining the height of land past Avalanche Lake. I've studied them a few times, and they look to be very ski able in a good snow year. Not to sound like a turd...

    The Gothics

Chiller Pillar Chiller Pillar can be TR'ed easily, and is generally less crowded than the canyon or Cascade Pass. It's off the Memorial Highway near the toll both for Whiteface. Should be in good shape in the up coming days. :D

    Ice Climbing

Good luck and have fun, it's a fun climb. You will do just fine. Hope that it stays cold. It was in pretty rough shape last weekend. Very thin and hollow at the top out, undermined by roaring water. It should come back with the colder temps. I've bumped into Ian a few times, the first being...

    Where to Finish?

My vote is for Santanoni because it sounds like you really enjoyed the area and the challenge of the hike. A suggestion would be to celebrate with a hike into The Great camp for lunch the day after, to gaze on your accomplishment. :D

    lost snowshoes on Mt. Colden

Not to be brash but , Some technical climbers would say, FREE BOOTY! :( But that's what differentiates the hiking community, from the climbing "scene". I hope you can get up there in the next few days. If I could, I'd take a look for you. :( If they are still there, I'm sure a member...

What was your toughest winter summit?

Lillian Brook Descent off Dix range , Winter after Hurricane Floyd 2000 I've had some tough ones, but this one sticks out the most in my memory. My stupid decision to descend Lillian Brook a few months after Floyd. My buddy Shane and I, climbed Macomb via the slide and camped in the col...

    Knifes Edge in Winter

Thanks all, Twig, Does the bunk house have a phone number? Spencer your suggestion sounds like the best way to do it. But instead of 3 nights out, we most likely would head out to some sort of lodging after the summit attempt. We plan on traveling on skis without sleds and light, "Alpine...
