Zion National Park Trip - Looking for Advice

If you don't want to use a rope you can also access much of the Subway from the lower end. It's basically just a hike along a canyon bottom with some splashing in the stream for normal water levels (after you drop down into the canyon on a steep herd path). This also eliminates the need for a...

Zion National Park Trip - Looking for Advice

If the weather and river conditions allow, the Narrows is definitely a must do. There's nothing else like it. I've done Angels Landing and Observation Point several times each. Both obviously have great views. Angels Landing is fun for the exposure factor as you go up the narrow ridge with...

NH residents hike free in state parks this summer

Thanks for posting this. I enjoyed a free hike of Monadnock this morning.

    Black Bear in the Whites

I generally watch them run away as soon as they notice me. At least that's how it has worked in all my encounters with black bears. It does pay to remember that every bear is an individual and it's impossible to know what it's thinking and how it may act.

Your Top 10 Photos of 2011...

After visiting Alaska for the first time this year, it was tough to select only 10 photos. I've cheated a bit and not included my photo from the "one photo of 2011" thread. :) The morning view from our tent at the Wonder Lake Campground in Denali National Park. Some of the lower peaks in...

    Your favorite photo of 2011

Choosing only one photo is hard. How about one of my fuzzy brothers in Alaska? He's not really charging the photographer, he's actually hurrying to his favorite fishing spot!

    L.L. Bean Crestas

I've had mixed luck with the Crestas, but I would mostly recommend them. I bought a pair this summer and did enjoy their easy break in and slightly wider fit than the Asolos and Scarpas I compared them against. However after about 6 or 8 days of hiking the rand started to delaminate from the...

    Water crossings up North Twin

I hiked the North Twin trail on last Saturday. I skipped the first two crossings (from the road). The "bushwhack" has a very defined herd path and is very easy to follow. I remarked that it was better than quite a few real trails I've hiked. I'm sure the first two crossings are doable, but...

    National Parks in Winter?

Rocky Mountain National Park While not technically winter, I've enjoyed two long weekend trips to Rocky Mountain National Park in mid to late April. Both times we had excellent snowshoeing on consolidated spring snow. Temperatures were in the 30s and 40s which was most pleasant. You can...

Joshua Tree? No, not the album!

I was at Joshua Tree for 3 days over Thanksgiving. Days varied from a high of 40 with a 20mph North wind (cold!) to calm and upper 50s (warm). There are lots of nice short to medium day hikes which is what I did. The 7.5 mile Boy Scout Trail / Willow Grove hike was an excellent overview of...

    Pierce/Eisenhower conditions

I hiked Pierce today (Friday 5/28). Not many people on the trail today, but very heavy traffic headed north this evening. Crawford Path to the Mizpah cutoff is in great shape with no snow. Crawford Path from the cutoff to Pierce has 10-12 large blowdowns, much dry trail, some...

Cell Coverage in the Whites - Best Provider?

I have the same problems with Verizon in the mountains. I've stopped even carrying the foolish thing on hikes. At home in the flatlands, reception is great.

    Mt. Clinton Road Parking Lot

In the past, I've also used the Highland Center lot on occasion when unable to access the FS lot. I believe it is posted for use by hotel guests only. Has anyone ever had a problem using the Highland Center lot for a day hike?

    Humphreys Peak, AZ

You can call the USFS ranger station in Flagstaff and get current conditions. I called last year in late May before heading out West only to discover the peak was still covered in a ton of snow (I wasn't interested in hauling my snowshoes and/or crampons out there). From the webcam it does...

    AMS - Food Considerations

My experience is that I don't have any problems from altitude below 10K. I'd expect you'll be fine, just a bit slower hiking than your normal sea level pace. We spent 10 days this summer in Yellowstone / Grand Teton at 8K-10K and had no issues.

    Sierra in late September

My experience is similar to Kevin's ... I've done several trips through there between mid-September and mid-October. Generally we've been blessed with beautiful clear weather (with the exception of a few inches of snow as we descended Whitney) with days in the 50s up high and nights dropping...
