    unhiking

I guess I am the culprit here. I would rate my comment as snarky, or maybe sarcastic. I don't see this as any reason to think that I took anything as a personal affront. You have to admit that proposing the removal of large sections of Rts 302, 93, and 16 is pretty radical and difficult to...

    unhiking

Please count me among the low-life car drivers who are glad that we can get from Littleton to North Conway in less than 4 hours. I'm all set for trails and roads. I wouldn't add any and wouldn't remove any. I also confess to occasionally enjoying tourist watching on top of Mt. Washington. If...

How do you deal with your back problems?

I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on TV and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night. However: I had back spasms about 15 years ago that bugged me for over year. After trying a bunch of stuff I finally started swimming laps for 30 minutes per day about 4 times a week. It may be a...

    Baxter-Hamlin Triathlon 2-24-2008

BSP Triathalon February 24, 2008 Having our slightly modified group of four (Rollie, Onestep, MarkL, and Pig Pen), and having apparently won the weather lottery, we made the decision to "go" on the previous Wednesday. Actually the first issue to arise on this trip was that we got late word...

    Dealing with Declination

Keep in mind that if you adjust the declination on your compass, its no good outside of the Northeast, which might might be ok for you. I just add 15 degrees to a true bearing to get a magnetic bearing. I can't hit a bearing within 1 degree anyway.

Winter road access for Stratton in southern Vermont.

In past years the road from West Wardsboro (East Side) has been plowed to the Long Trail. I have never seen it plowed from the East Arlington Side. I haven't been down there in winter for a couple of years however.

    Baxter state park

Please let us know how the BSP people respond if you put that itinerary on your permit request.

    "Ayaah, to cold to snow."

And on another note, is the statement: "You can't get thar from heah" ever true?

    Frostbite prevetion = Good

Maybe it's just me, but I'm having some difficulty with the concept of "stopping to warm up". When it's cold I like to keep to moving with very very very short stops to do necessary clothing adjustments and drinking and eating.

    Baxter State Park Rules

OK, that was a cheap shot, I officially resign as Grand Puba. Plus, apparently I don't even know how to spell Poohbah. (Thanks TS)

    Baxter State Park Rules

I wouldn't be whining if BSP wasn't such a great winter destination. I don't even buy that the rangers need to know who is in the park, but even if they do, I don't think that two weeks lead time is necessary to accomplish that. They seem to be able to get the weather report in there every...

MSR Plastic Snowshoes - any good?

I have used Denali Ascents for the past 5 years. I have had one failure in that time with fairly heavy usage. My humble review is that they Kick A##.

    Baxter State Park Rules

I can already see that my reign as Grand Puba of Baxter State Park is going to be a troubled one. The natives are getting restless.

    Baxter State Park Rules

Thank you for supporting my argument against the four person minimum. Those ice climbers would would have been much better off with an experienced group of three. But I'm talking about hiking not climbing. If you read all of my stuff you would know that I have no problem with the Chimney Pond...

    Study: Northeast winters warming fast

I am a global warming skeptic but I don't feel like I have enough knowledge to competently argue the point here. I would like to thank forestgnome for being willing to carry the torch for his point of view. My only thoughts (and I am in no way trying to represent these as FG's views, he may...

    Baxter State Park Rules

Thank you for appointing me Grand Puba of Baxter State Park. I have been visiting the park two or three times a year for several years now. I am attracted by the unparalleled beauty and wildness of the place... And ... well .. um ...there are a bunch of 3ks on my list in there. Anyway, I'm happy...

    Baxter State Park Rules

You are about one quarter correct here. The permit form that asks for previous experience eliminates the yahoos and Sunday strollers. The 4 person minimum increases the likelyhood that a yahoo or Sunday stroller might be on the trip. A socially challenged trip leader might try to scrounge any...

    Baxter State Park Rules

First of all, let me state that I never pass up an opportunity to gripe about Baxter's winter rules. So taking the thread somewhat off topic is all on me. There are no statistics on death or injuries in Baxter State Park vs other areas, because the accident rate vs the number of winter hikes is...

    Baxter State Park Rules

The rule that is sighted does not even scratch the surface of the problem with Baxter State Park's winter rules. The winter rules at Baxter Park make it the most dangerous place to hike in the northeast. If it were not for their winter rules, winter hiking in Baxter would be fairly routine and...
