Same for Algonquin a few years back. I had to be convinced (at length, apparently) that it was not a goof and that they really wanted the stones up top; I kept thinking of (adopt Austrian accent) The Eiger Sanction. Once I got there, I finally believed it was something other than a practical joke.
At the very same top were two very nice young ladies, "stewards," one of whom answered my query about a nearby peak with a reliable listing of many (many) of the visible 46 from Algonquin Peak, and it was a beautiful day. She explained the stone-lined paths, and sedges, and lots of stuff! I'd never heard someone rattle off so many peaks from one vantage, and it was clear she had hiked them all. I thought "stewards" were the greatest thing since hiking boots and that there should be two or three at every summit.
Now, I've only been to Chocorua twice (Champney Falls, both times), once pretty much alone (mid-March, excellent ski) and once with the kids on Columbus Day, and I didn't really have any trouble finding the way either time, but saw how it could be possible in bad conditions. Maybe cooperhill could install a few "stewards" for this peak.
