A summer of no gas

Heading south from Baxter on June 23rd. My stove burns alcohol. Lets see if I can get 2175 miles per gallon of that :D

SOBO 08

Course June in Maine means at least a quart of DEET :p

Way to go! With any luck, I'll be trudging up a Cascade peak about that day.

Have fun!

Hillwalker, have an awesome time! Are you planning to do journals during your AT journey? If so, let us know, so we can keep up with your trip.

Hmmm, the 100-Mile in June, I'll bet you run through more DEET than fuel, easily! I'll be SOBO sectioning from Grafton this summer when I can get away, hope to see you on the trail.

The '97 is a B4, and it has the older 1.9 direct injected turbo, which is the easiest engine and chassis to work on and modify. At 245,000 miles, it's getting up there in age, but I should be able to get 400K before a rebuild. Even the rebuild is easy though, the engine doesn't even have to be removed from the car.

One of the main reasons I bought it was to reduce the fuel bill for heading to the Whites for winter hiking, and it does the job very well. I went from $58 round trip to $24, which adds up fast. I don't do a lot of higher speed driving though, mostly below 65 mph.

Hi Danielle and Kevin, thanks.

I'll try to keep my Trailjournals.com "Hillwalker" up, but pocketmail is now out of business it seems so I'm still looking for a way to do that. I need a full keyboard, not a numeric/alpha. I can see myself going nuts doing that. Also, Pocketmail used AAs which I would prefer to a rechargeable unit.

Anyone have an idea?

Could you use a cell phone's text messaging capabilities, and have someone upload your msg's to an online journal? Maybe there's a way to do that directly - I'm not a big user of text messaging.

gas price update

I traveled to CT and back this weekend. NH gas prices along the way were:

Bethlehem $3.29 gal.
Nashua Exit 6 $3.09 gal.
Ashland Exit 24 $3.17 gal.

Plymouth Exit 25 usually has decent prices, but I didn't stop there this time, so I don't know what they were charging.

CT gas prices were higher, but the good news is I didn't see snow in either CT or MA and enjoyed temps in the mid to upper 40s. There's hope that spring is indeed on it's way....back in Bethlehem this am, it was 15 degrees with no shortage of snow. If only my car could run on that... ;)

I was going to comment about a fairly new thread on WB about PM. I went over their to grab the link for you and realized you started the thread Doh!!!!
I hate even making simple trail notes for myself on a Bberry, and TJ's would require een more writing....

I was wondering the same thing and thought perhaps a diesel Mercedes?
Yeah the e300 TD. I bought a good used one pretty cheap in May. I always put HIGH miles on my cars, wanted something nice for commuting and re-sale if I didn't like it and always wanted to "try" a diesel Mercedes. It's working out okay so far.

I have a '97 Passat TDI and I am averaging 49.7 MPG since I bought it last Oct (I'm a numbers nut).
I think the next car after my wife's mini-van goes will be a diesel Passat. Our driving does not favor hybrids.

Filled up for $3.09 at the Tilton Exxon last night. I consider that a victory.

Are there other ways to communicate besides text messaging?? Heh heh. ;)

I think Subaru may produce a diesel Outback in the near future. I know the outback went to a 3rd generation in 2005 (I have one) so the next one is somewhat due in 2010 if they stick to their 5 year generation model.

of course, when Toyota purchased the shares of Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru
s parent) from GM, there was a buzz about a hybrid outback but I haven't really heard anything other than talk and design rumors.... I know FHI does a lot of work with batteries and Toyota has a lot of need for good and lightweight batteries to power it's hybrids so the pairing of Toyota and FHI makes sense, but it remains to be seen if toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive makes the move to Subarus... It certainly feels nicer than having General Motors as a parent for sure.
