Thought paddlers here would be interested in knowing about this journey: http://www.centralmaine.com/2014/08/19/lone-canoeist-reaches-skowhegan-after-nearly-500-miles-of-paddling/
Her reason for paddling puzzles me a bit ... "To better know myself."
That doesn't motivate me ... maybe because of my age I feel I've already figured that out ... but I wondered what others thought. What motivates others to paddle and whether the reason varies with the length of the paddle, day trip, long weekend, or epic? I would expect the reasons to be similar to the reasons for hiking; being outdoors with nature and wildlife, exercise, navigational challenge, economy of the sport compared to other activities. I've also found a spiritual value to it.
There is also a related article in the latest (Oct. 2014) Northwoods Sporting Journal but that article isn't on-line.
