Great time in the Berchtesgaden Alps in August 2010. Anyone needing more info do not hesitate to send me a message.

A few interesting observations about their huts:

No hiking shoes inside the hut - the hut has complimentary slippers or bring your own

No sleeping bag needed but a hut sack (lightweight cotton bag) mandatory. Their blankets were clean.

Huts had a dedicated hiking shoes dry room with drying bars for each shoe. Very nice.

Fresh Buttermilk at huts accessible to Mountain Pastures with cows.

Great discount rate for members of the Alpine Club - 50% off on lodging. (on average 8 euros per night with the discount)

approximate elevations:
2 huts at 2100 meters
2 huts at 1800 meters
2 huts at 1600 meters

WOW. Thanks for the memories and pictures. I stayed overnight in a mountain hut on the hike up to the Zugspitse in 1979. The hut there was basically two shelves. One set of shelves slept men and the other shelf slept the women. Very small, but clean and the same rules about shoes. It was a great experience.

Oh my! (picks jaw up off the floor) We've looked at some of the Swiss Alps huts before and thought that it would make a dream trip. Now I see that there's another equally amazing option. What an absolutely incredible place. We love the White Mountain huts but this is a whole 'nuther world. The hut amenities sound fantastic. I perhaps see a summer vacation in our future...

Switzerland is also on my list. I think it is worth to investigate a membership in the Alpine Club. The european countries reciprocate membership discounts. There is some possibility that American Alpine Club membership would work as well. The German Alpine Club membership was 70 euros for a family. A family of 4 could break even in 2 nights at the hut.

If you bring your own food it is a bargain. But it is hard to resist the options at the huts. :D
