Saturday, Lauky and I set out for the Mt. Kinsman trail with the intent of finishing another round of the 48.
The new trailhead is not hard to find, but it is possible to drive right past the rather modest trailhead sign.
We started off under fall conditions on the new trail and rather quickly came to the junction with the old trail.
The lower section of the Mt. Kinsman trail is very smooth under foot with moderate grades. The three stream crossings were a bit of a challenge as the water was fairly high. I managed to get across all three without going in, but Lauky did go for an unintended swim.
The snow line started around 2500' and very quickly after that we found the trail covered with snow.
By the time we reached the ridge we found ourselves in full winter conditions.
When I stopped to put on my spikes I noticed that Lauky was shivering. He was still wet from his swim and he is still in his summer cut, his coat hasn't grown out yet, so I put his jacket on him. That seemed to do the trick and he didn't show any more signs of being cold.
When we finally reached South Kinsman we had reached our goal. Three year old Lauky had finished his second round, and I my fourth. I don't know if dogs can ever be 'proud' of other dogs, but if they can be, I'm sure Duffy would have been 'proud' of his little brother.
The beautiful winter conditions stayed with us until we got back down below the snow line again.
Finally, back at the car, somewhat bedraggled looking but none the worse for wear, Lauky shows off the new bandanna with all his patches that my wife made for him for this occasion.
