Back in the mid 90's the company I was working for flew a similar one up to Mount Spurr, a volcano that had erupted a few years before. This was a project for Carnige Mellon to try to get a robot to send to Mars.

It seems that it worked out fairly well, until it tripped and fell...

I believe they had named it Dante IIRC, and took him home in many pieces.
