Not for reasons of someone stealing your stuff but you should never leave your pack too far away, especially in remote areas. Hopefully in your pack you have things that could help you in an emegency and you shouldn't take the chance of something happening and you not having what you need.

I lost a pair of eyeglasses on a bushwack from Doubletop along the Catskill boundary to the Pine Hill-West Branch Trail near Biscuit Brook. This was a solo hike in 1996. If anyone ever wants to find them have fun. They just fell off my face into a snowbank. I wonder if anyone put them on a stick since?
By the Way - I drove home for two hours blindly and made it.
