Since the weather forecasters seemed to think it would rain all weekend, sounds like a perfect trip to the ADKs. Maria, a newly assimilated VFTT hiker put together a cabin on Lincoln Pond in E-town, (Even though it is bigger than some lakes I know) and a hearty group of 6 ventured north from the confines of the NYC metro area or from Boston to convene at a little cabin in the woods. Plans were going back and forth all week but it was decided that the not-rain would make perhaps doing Whiteface and Esther somewhat good. More because Maria needed Esther having already done Whiteface this past summer.
So, off we go, driving through Jay and Upper Jay, towards Wilmington and the ASRC, we drop a car off there cause we intended to go from Connery Pond since neither ferrisjrf nor I have ever gone in from there and it's supposedly "cool"
Sure enough, this is the nicer, somewhat drier way, a few stream crossings but a bit less muddy and a nice 3.1 mile flat stroll to Whiteface landing, in which we stopped for a bit and admired a huge boathouse across the lake. (We did not see any Crocodiles. ).
thinking sooner or later, we'll have to gain like 3k' in 3.1 miles, sure enough, the scramble up shortly begins after Whiteface landing. Somehow after putting the lead down, I manage to drop the other schmoes and reach the first good viewpoint which, because of the not-rain was fairly socked in.
turned out that Maria, who needs Esther, wasn't feeling great that day and turned back, and I hit the summit about 45 minutes in front of the rest. The cloud ceiling was fairly high but clouds were moving fast from the NW but then it would occasionally break and I would get views of Lake Placid (the lake) and the stunning red maples between it and Whiteface. But mostly it was in the clouds. The auto road was open and this was the first time I've been up there when the building was open so we spent time checking that out amongt the tourists.
Managed to run into Pete from AHP.COM who was finishing that day with friends. (Congrats!!!) on his way down and eventually the rest of the slugs arrived and we had a quick bite to eat. Not once, was not-raingear donned and we continued down towards the ASRC side, with the side trip to Esther a longish feeling muddy slog up. There is a short view at the summit looking at the undercast which was really cool but mostly a viewless summit. ...and one that Maria still needs
Back down the steep trail to Marble Mtn and down the thankfully dry slope to the ASRC, never once did it rain not even really threaten to rain...
A nice day in the ADKs!
The next day we would do Noonmark under worse conditions but still no rain, clouds were socking in the summits of the eastern Great range and the summit of noonmark was clouded but views were had on the slope and we did the loop, down towards round Pond and then back via the trail in between Noonmark and Round Mtn.
