I'm planning on doing another great range traverse and with the memory of not knowing where any water was on the range fresh in my mind from my previous traverse I wanted to know where or if there is any water on the great range. Specifically I'm talking between Lower Wolf Jaw and Basin. Thanks in advance for any help that you can give me.

Not much water.between wj's can head down to find water.from upper on till orebed no real water unless it rained the night before or if in snow season,(pleanty of water this spring during snow melt).even orebed must head down aways.I always pump 2x 32oz. 1/2 way up hedgehog.then again at basin /haystack col.(nice little stream),then down john's brook to garden or indian brook if going out to lodge.I did this route a few weeks after your trip(july 2) but had nice cool mist/ rain untill basin / haystack col.(see trip report 2 ranges 2 days 2 fun).great trip just look for cool weather.have a good one.
you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.(gd)look right.

Hi Dave, we found a very good source of water at the bottom of the col between Basin and Haystack. You can't miss it. It looks like a campsite with a nice pool on the left below the trail as you go towards Haystack. We drank our fill, filled our water bladders then soaked our hats and shirts to cool off. You know how hot it was :) . Good luck.

Check my short trip report from the range last weekend.

Here's how we handle water on the range:

We start at Roostercomb with minimal water (less than 1 liter per person). That takes us over Roostercomb and Hedgehog in the cool of the early AM.

In the Hedgehog / LWJ col is the junction with the W.A. White trail. A couple hundred feet past that junction on the way up LWJ, the headwaaters of Deer Brook flow right next to the trail on the right. That's pretty reliable most years, and had plenty of water last weekend. We filter 2 liters per person there. That carries us over the jaws, Armstrong, Gothics, Saddleback and Basin.

As was pointed out earlier on this thread, Haystack Brook in the Haystack Basin col is reliable. We filter about a liter and a half there. That carries us over the Haystack shoulder and Marcy.

On the way down Marcy to Slant Rock, John's Brook has water shortly below the trail junction, although we usually have enough to walk out to JBL and use the handy outdoor faucet.

Other water on the range requires a trip off the ridge and off the route. If you run into water trouble, you can usually find some about 10 minutes down the wolfjaws notch trail and about 5 minutes down the orebed trail.
