A large duffle is a good place to stash anything you feel would be questionable as carry-ons. I put things like poles, an ice axe or breakables in the center swaddled by clothing.
Poles are fine. Stoves have always been OK with my friends and I as checked luggage so long as they have never had gasoline in them. The gas fumes, however long you're aired it out will give off explosive markers to sniffing machines. Buy a new stove and check it in its original box unopened, or mail your stove to a friends or store at your destination.
Buy new fuel bottles at your destination.

One thing to pay particular attention to...The TSA regs are just the minimal guidelines. Individual airlines can restrict them further. And even if you have a letter or email from the airline stating that you can check a certain item, the gate people have the final say. A friendly smile and attitude goes a long way before you board the plane.
