After celebrating Roberts daughters 1yr. olds birthday we headed off @7:30pm for the trail head arriving around 10:30pm. After layering up we crawled in to our sleeping bags, set the alarm and off to sleep. Waking around 5:30am monday morning both off us had cold feet, temps. where in the 30-32 degree mark. Warmed up in the cab of the truck checked our packs for gear, food and water and depart 6:20am. Head lamps in use for maybe 20 minutes the sun lite up the skys to wonderful tree colors and mountain fog in the valleys.

. Stopping a few times to shed clothes and to check our map as we where looking at snow capped peak which turned out to be algonquin we make good pace to the river crossing. Well let me tell ya I've seen some things in my life but Robert sporting trash bags on his feet along with water shoes to try and cross this river was just funny!!!!

. Myself, I packed in lax. boots which i had no problems with cold or wet feet. So onward from there, in and out of views of the morning rising along with now some frost on the berry bushes. The long walk to the camping area was just cool, looking at staring at theses peaks and there colors that seemed to jump out at us. Arriving at the camp site we take a 20 minute break before the real work starts. Arriving as we leave, a woman trying to cross the stream without getting wet. Give her the point at which we crossed with was to deep for her shoes. Off we head to reach the peak. Its not soon after when she catches up and passes us leaving us thinking WOW, can she move, later to find her name to be kerry, from burlington, its here 6th time.... Well scrambling up the slabs laced with mudd, running water , slim and now spitting snow we are greeted by kerry headed down which we stop and talk for 10-15 mintues or so and say our goodbye and goodlucks we forge on..Finally not long we summitt. Well on the way up we did see some snow but the top was not covered but had thicker patches. Take a few pictures and enjoy the view from a lookout point. As we are eatting the clouds roll in some and what was 10 minutes ago was not anymore other than white. Off we go happy with our day so far, great weather and views. The return trip down was some slow going as to be sure not to slip and ruin the day to accident. After a few stops for snacks and rest, we arrive back at the river crossing, robert this time rock hops just to the left of the markers crossing without any trouble. Myself, I'm sticking with my boots.....The rest off the way out was left to enjoying the surroundings. At on point at the gravel bed we are greeted by to deer who pose for a picture then move on. Plenty of grouse along the way we scared up too. A few more pictures of the floating bridge

I'll admire anyone that leaves Allen with that attitude. Congrats. I liked it because it is such a different ADK mtn to climb. I did it in summer and it can be a bit hot out in those exposed fields. Autumn may just be the perfect time to be there.

Hmm..... weather looks nice for this weekend again...... and I do need Allen still, lol!

Nice trip report Rob! Sorry Gail and I missed you! :)

Go get it freddy! :D ... Bubba..I'll second your thought about it being a different peak. It meanders thru many different surroundings, berrys, hardwoods, pine. The pictures off my camera dont do it justice. Thanks to all. allen seems to be my last of the yr. not much for the winter, although id snowshoe other places :D ..Tom , kerry had said she hurt her leg during the early part of the week and needed a long walk to stretch her legs out..OMG..thats a long walk alrighty....... :D

I'm the before mentioned Robert who did this Allen hike with Viewseeker, you know the guy with the plastic bags. Nice idea but they leaked. Just downstreem from where the bridge was a person can easily rock hop across with no problems, I'd try that before messing with crossing where they have the temporary trail marked. Water level can probably go up another 6" and still be able to cross where I did and all needed rocks would still be above water and dry.

Viewseeker and I make a good team, we compliment each other's pace very well. We are by no means speed hikers but thought we kept a resonable pace till getting our doors blown in by Kerry. She had left the trailhead 1hr15min after us and caught up with us at the campsite about 7 miles in. Viewseeker and I had taken some nice breaks and just enjoying the day, but she definitely mopped the floor with us, great pace.

This was my third time up Allen (last June, this past winter, and now). Kerry said it was her 6th or 7th time and that she had just 6 or so more peaks to hit before having climbed them all during all four seasons. Way to go!

there where times that i was so tired and then seemed to be able to just push thru and picked up the pace and felt great.. as much near the end i wanted to be at the truck, a part of me wanted nothing more than to slow down and smell the colors of the leaves and watch the sun set over the sky. Goodtimes :D

I've been known to "step it on out" during the last leg of a hike, wanting nothing more than to get back to the truck. But this time I actually slowed, let Viewseeker go on without me. The day had been so wonderfull I did not want it to end, so I slowed down and just enjoyed the last mile.

The first time I did Allen last June it took me 9.5hrs, it rained all day so I never stopped for any breaks.

This time it took us like 11.5hrs or so. But we stopped several times and enjoyed the adventure.

When I hiked it this past winter it took us something like 16hrs or more, I forget the exact time, trying to delete it from memory. I was dead tired, held the the other two guys up, they could have been moving a lot faster without my dead weight.

Kerry's quite a fast hiker, indeed. Funny coincidence, I met her on Allen, too.

Good job getting this out of the way peak crossed off your list. Think it took us 10 hours on the nose for Allen, but that's just what happens when you hike with the Power (All Girl Power!) :D ...and Kerry started after us and finished first .... :p

Neat to read about snow! We were out in the Sandwich Range of NH yesterday and didn't see a bit of snow.
