Jobs on the AMC trail crew were posted at NH Employment Security but the posting may have expired by the time you read this. Wonder if they will actually hire North Country locals or is this a feel-good thing.

Wage listed was $8/hr, not much for the tough work they do but back when I was eligible the AMC used their non-profit status to pay below minimum wage.

What is the minimum wage in NH, anyway?

I think $8/hr may be the starting pay for lots of AMC jobs.

So what is the sweat equity return?

did 7 months in the amc huts program a few years ago as a caretaker. i started at under $7 ($6.75 i think). got a quarter more each season. about 40 bucks was taken out for food and lodging. that was all you could carry to the hut and 3 meals a day at pinkham or highland center and a place to sleep on your days off. i think trail crew works sort of the same way though more time is spent camping in the backcountry and the work is obviously much more physically demanding.
i know they tend to adverstise open positions, but probably most non-seasonable positions are already filled by someone in house. advertised more as a gesture.
i would love to still be doing it were there more money involved. i came to it late (was 27 at the time which i think made me the oldest hut crew member the whole time i was there) and with loans and other things to pay could only afford to stay with the job for so long. i saw it as a semi paid vacation and was possibly the greatest 7 months of my life.

Well, let's see, if they deducted food & lodging at regular hut rate for 7 days you would have had to pay them :)

At one time each AMC facility/activity hired it's own staff and set it's own pay rates, usually below minimum wage which was legal for non-profits. One of the things the present executive director insisted upon was that hiring be centralized as the only practical way to ensure compliance with various labor laws. This resulted in higher pay for fewer hours in most cases.
