Actually, I was wondering if grouseking had gone S of the pass--you clearly had to have done so to climb Flume and Scaur Peaks.
Actually climbed Scaur up the ridge from the pass, since PBB wasn't broken I went for the shorter approach

Livermore Rd (old name*) goes as far as the junction with Kanc Brk Tr and continues as Livermore Tr to the Kanc. AFAIK the entire way is a hiking trail (and is shown as such on the AMC map).

* Someone had the bright idea of renaming the upper portion of the Road (above the commercial XC ski area) as Trail. The treadway is still a road no matter what they call it.
I thought the distinction was between the improved gravel road you could drive on and the boggy section best done in winter.

This is called Livermore Road because it went from Waterville to Livermore, the more peculiar question is why the N portion was renamed to Sawyer River Trail as it's still the old road. [The section just S of the Kanc has been relocated to start at Lily Pond but you can still walk the old route to the Kanc nearer Sawyer River trailhead.]

I thought the new naming was to distinguish the part used by the Waterville XC system from the part outside of the XC system.

I suppose that one could also ask why the northern part isn't/wasn't named the "Waterville Rd"...

Nice report. I love this trail. I try to hike it once a year, usually with snow on the ground. I have been on the trail numerous times and have never seen another soul (or even tracks).
