Oh well ... I thought this would be tricky, but New Hampshire guessed it. Normally Hale is normally a viewless summit, but a mischievous person named Mark used a shovel to build up a nifty viewing platform to enable marvelous views that hale is capable of providing. Here's the uncropped view of the first picture.
Here's Mark hard at work. Guerilla theater at it's best! What some people will do for a view from the top.
His snow tower and many happy hikers.
Here's Mark! Thanks a lot Mark! You really made our hike to Hale special!
Me and Silentcal once considered a real whacky idea for our friend Pucknuts who finished his 48 on Hale (he picked it because it was an easy hike his kids could possibly do). We were going to hike up with an 8 foot step ladder so he could get views. Unfortunately Silentcal could not make the day, and I was not about to hike a ladder up by myself
Hale used to have those views for free. The first time I climbed it we camped on the summit on the night of the first US/Soviet space vehicles (7/17/75). We could clearly see them as they circled the earth. The next day we were off to Tom's viewless summit
