The failed re-establishment of caribou included helicoptering some to Katahdin's tableland. From which they disappeared. The running joke was that they were delicious.

There is a small well protected caribou herd on Mt. Jacques Cartier on the Gaspe of Quebec.

The inability of caribou to survive in Maine, specifically the herd that was introduced in Baxter Park, was believed to be a disease fatal to the species but not to other ungulates, compounded by a vulnerability to predators, specifically black bears, and perhaps poachers.

Deer carry parasites that are very dangerous to moose. Generally, the habitat has difficulty supporting more than one species; niches (eg. altitude) can work, however. BTW, FWIW, carbou are absolutely delicious with the taste of aged Angus beef and the texture and tenderness of horse.
