With one more mild day of tap, I needed to get out. At first I wanted to hike up Moose Mtn, but the 8 mile bike ride up 1000 feet didn't really tickle my fancy. So last second, I decided to head to Happy Hill shelter in VT. I walked from my apt (about 2 miles) to the trail head and went into the woods, around noon.
I saw 2-3 turkeys in the distance along the first 1/4 mile. I should have taken a pic, because I basically followed them for a good 50 yards, but it was really dark so I didn't think the pics would come out too well. Eventually, they went their separate way and I had the trail to myself for the rest of the day! Well, me, mosquitoes, black flies, and ticks...
The AT is Norwich isn't the prettiest section in th world, but its definitely quiet once you get away from the road. Plus, the leaves are starting to come out, even above 1,000 feet, and I saw my first trillium of the year.
There were many other tiny wildflowers, but the pics didn't come out so hot. After some time, I came across the Happy Hill Shelter, which was reached by a short side trail.
The shelter itself was really nice, and I could see myself staying the night there if I needed to get away from everything.
While hanging out, eating some snacks, I went thru the little bag they had, which had a journal, important info about the Upper Valley for thru hikers, and this funny little article.
Trying to scare people at night much?
A few other shots in and around the shelter...
Goodbye winter
continued in a minute...
