With one more mild day of tap, I needed to get out. At first I wanted to hike up Moose Mtn, but the 8 mile bike ride up 1000 feet didn't really tickle my fancy. So last second, I decided to head to Happy Hill shelter in VT. I walked from my apt (about 2 miles) to the trail head and went into the woods, around noon.

I saw 2-3 turkeys in the distance along the first 1/4 mile. I should have taken a pic, because I basically followed them for a good 50 yards, but it was really dark so I didn't think the pics would come out too well. Eventually, they went their separate way and I had the trail to myself for the rest of the day! Well, me, mosquitoes, black flies, and ticks...

The AT is Norwich isn't the prettiest section in th world, but its definitely quiet once you get away from the road. Plus, the leaves are starting to come out, even above 1,000 feet, and I saw my first trillium of the year.

There were many other tiny wildflowers, but the pics didn't come out so hot. After some time, I came across the Happy Hill Shelter, which was reached by a short side trail.

The shelter itself was really nice, and I could see myself staying the night there if I needed to get away from everything.

While hanging out, eating some snacks, I went thru the little bag they had, which had a journal, important info about the Upper Valley for thru hikers, and this funny little article.

Trying to scare people at night much? :)

A few other shots in and around the shelter...

Goodbye winter

On the way back

I came across a nice view, just off the trail, about 1.5 miles from the road. It looks into NH and you can see Moose Mtn, Holts Ledge, Smarts, Cube, and Moosilauke. If you have your zoom on, you can see a tiny part of Franconia Ridge too!

Moosialuke

They aren't the clearest pics in the world, but it was a nice surprise to see the western Whites.

On the way home I came across a nice sky, and a pretty brook, flowing heavily.

It didn't feel too cold... :)

Another successful hike! Patiently waiting for the snow to melt up north.

Nice TR and pictures. Any day on any part of the AT is a GREAT day. I've been itching to get back for a weekend backpack in the near future.
Thanks for sharing. :)

Ah, Happy Hill. The old cabin up there was never really used to its potential. It was the oldest shelter on the AT, actually built before the AT came into existance, but I've never been to the new one. Nice photos.

And it's sad that I can recognize the handwriting of the guy who routed that orange sign. :)

Sweet outing! Looked like ya had a blast...(BTW liked the Killer Griz flyer....thats great stuff :) )
