It doesn't say if it was a thru hiker but he had hiked 20 miles that day. The follow up artlicle that is found on this like states his name and he is from Flushing NY.

Oh no!! That is one of the most beautiful areas to camp in, the ponds are beautiful, and the camp at Pierce Pond serves unbelievable breakfasts starting just about this time of year. I can only speculate that the hiker had an unforeseen medical problem...
