First, the fender bender on I-93 north on Sunday morning.
We were driving along around 40 MPH when I saw an 18-wheeler parked in my lane, about 200 yards ahead of me. ABS, new tires, and the judicious use of the snow along the left guardrail led to a safe stop about 40' before the car in front of me. RobRox yelled "keep rolling" but it was too late, we got rear ended by a sliding Taurus, but fortunately no real damage to my car or any of us, just a new badge of honor on the Suby bumper. Directly in front of me was 59 cars-worth of carnage. Two hours later we were on our way, a bit more sober and a bit more eager to experience some of the fresh snow.
We had planned to go to Cardigan but changed our plans for something closer. RR took us to a private stash and we found ourselves the only car in the parking area. Yvonne and I followed Rob's lead and headed up for our first run. We had to break trail but there was a good crust and 6" of fresh so it wasn't bad. There was evidence of the ice storm all around us, lots of branches and whole trees down.
Time for skiing! The snow was in excellent condition, one set of tracks coming down from a known player who gotten the goods before us. We followed his tracks since he knew what had been cleaned up after the storm. Rob let us have early tracks since neither Yvonne or I had been there before.
It was pretty sweet! A good 6+" of fresh snow on top of a pretty bombproof crust. Some sections of the woods were tight so you had to be able to commit to the turns and pick a line in real time. We made it down to the road and hiked up a short ways to start up our second run, taking a different route. As we were eating lunch before heading up we heard some voices, and another 3 skiers/rider came up, one being a friend of Rob's who rides here all the time. They had to go drop someone off so we started up a steep track left by snowshoers. About 2/3 of the way up he caught up to us, splitboard on his back. We arrived up top a second time and headed down a different run that would end up in about the same place.
At the bottom our boarder friend gave us a lift back to our car, saving us a bit of a road walk. We spent 4 hours on the hill, could easily have spent 4 more.
It was a very interesting day; one that makes you feel good to be alive in many ways. Not the day we planned on when we started out, but a good day none the less.
Carpe ski'em.
