We were driving along around 40 MPH when I saw an 18-wheeler parked in my lane, about 200 yards ahead of me. ABS, new tires, and the judicious use of the snow along the left guardrail led to a safe stop about 40' before the car in front of me. RobRox yelled "keep rolling" but it was too late, we got rear ended by a sliding Taurus, but fortunately no real damage to my car or any of us, just a new badge of honor on the Suby bumper. Directly in front of me was 59 cars-worth of carnage. Two hours later we were on our way, a bit more sober and a bit more eager to experience some of the fresh snow.

We had planned to go to Cardigan but changed our plans for something closer. RR took us to a private stash and we found ourselves the only car in the parking area. Yvonne and I followed Rob's lead and headed up for our first run. We had to break trail but there was a good crust and 6" of fresh so it wasn't bad. There was evidence of the ice storm all around us, lots of branches and whole trees down.

Time for skiing! The snow was in excellent condition, one set of tracks coming down from a known player who gotten the goods before us. :) We followed his tracks since he knew what had been cleaned up after the storm. Rob let us have early tracks since neither Yvonne or I had been there before.

It was pretty sweet! A good 6+" of fresh snow on top of a pretty bombproof crust. Some sections of the woods were tight so you had to be able to commit to the turns and pick a line in real time. We made it down to the road and hiked up a short ways to start up our second run, taking a different route. As we were eating lunch before heading up we heard some voices, and another 3 skiers/rider came up, one being a friend of Rob's who rides here all the time. They had to go drop someone off so we started up a steep track left by snowshoers. About 2/3 of the way up he caught up to us, splitboard on his back. We arrived up top a second time and headed down a different run that would end up in about the same place.

At the bottom our boarder friend gave us a lift back to our car, saving us a bit of a road walk. We spent 4 hours on the hill, could easily have spent 4 more.

It was a very interesting day; one that makes you feel good to be alive in many ways. Not the day we planned on when we started out, but a good day none the less.

Carpe ski'em.

not to get to philosophical but...

glad you escaped the carnage in Derry Sunday morning- what a mess!

great action shots!!!!

What a contrast between the craziness of the twisted metal and broken plastic and the peacful calm and the happy smiles of the fresh in the glades-

insanity vs sane!!!!

As my T shirt says- " I'm alergic to cities"

Hey Dave - glad to hear that you didn't have too much damage to your car and most importantly that you are OK!!!

I was heading up to meet Juniper and crew to do the Osceolas the same morning. Just before 8am - I saw a silver car after exit three that had spun out and was half sitting in the snowbank perpendicular to the high speed lane. The road was barely plowed and I kept experiencing near white-out conditions. I made the decision to turn around at exit 4 in Derry and head back. It was a lousy morning to be traveling and it sounds like this pileup occurred shortly after I turned around!!!

Glad you were all okay and was able to stop! :)

Sounds like you managed to pull off a great day after all the waiting time...gave you plenty of opportunity to come up with planB!!

What an exquisitely happy face on the first close-up of the person wearing red !

2 hours of waiting at the pile-up.....ugh ! glad you weren't involved too much.

Interesting Day !

Carpe Ski'em ~ priceless

Dave ~ you could have supplied MUR with photo's! Maybe you did :p

It must have been surreal standing within the bumper - cars after all the crunching & crashing took place...........

Thank goodness you were still able to get out in the powder ~ Potentially the best therapy for a freakish morning
