That's a great thing! Does it tell you the elevation gain also? Delorme said 2,600' for the entire hike but it felt like more.

According the GPS Profile a total climb of 2963 feet with 425 feet descending from the start of th hike to the summit of Sandwich dome. Use this as a rough estimate though - not fact.

May I ask a stupid question? In the various photos I see of the trip, I notice that two or three hikers are carrying sleeping pads. May I ask why? In one photo I also see someone putting up a tent. Again, may I ask why?

Not a stupid question at all...I carry a pad when winter rolls aroung as part of my makeshift emergency gear...it is a good amount of insulation to keep you off the ground if you ever got stuck out there for any reason or any length of time, or just for added comfort at breaks...
