This is a little disturbing, so I will not show pics inline.

We had a hummingbird at the feeder last night. After a while, we noticed that it didn't seem to be moving, so I was able to take some really close up shots. I was hoping that it was just roosting a little early.

In the morning, we saw that this was not the case. The bird was dead, but still hanging by its feet, which were tightly clasped around the perch.

While unsettling, this picture shows just how beautiful these tiny creature are - even in death.

Damn Tom, what are you putting in your feeders!

JK, I have no idea how to judge a hummingbirds age (although I can google it like anything else) but it looks "old" to me. Pretty amazing little event, can't say I've ever heard that one before.

Hmmmmmmmmm.

If you contact a taxidermist he/she may be able to freeze dry it for posterity.

I thought I read "posteriority".

I saw this happen to a racoon once. Rather disturbing. It must have been hit by a car, walked a few feet and died still standing, like someone left some bad taxidermy roadside.

On a brighter note: I spent some time watching a hummingbird moth in our garden yesterday as I was whacking, Andre Agassi style, an infestation of Cicada Killer Wasps.
