We will be in the market for *several* apple pies this fall and we'd like to know:

Who has the BEST home baked apple pie?

Criteria:

Region should be from St Johnsbury VT across the White Mountains as far East as North Conway.

Pies should be graded on:

crust -flakey to firm
apples: large chunk to small
flavor: tartness to sweet
spice: mild to wild

Roadside table to cider mill to bakery -- all to be considered! Extra emphasis will be upon pie makers who double as ice creameries!!!

Thank You for you input.

:D

This sounds like an excellent research project. I'm anxious to hear your findings. - Ice Cream and Apple Pie lover, Ellen

My Dad's apple pies are the bestest :)

But I sincerely doubt he could be talked into mass producing them...

Good luck in your quest though!

Apple Pies

Northland Dairy Bar in Berlin on Rt. 16 just past the 12th St. bridge...a good restaurant also AND has great ice cream..they used to make their own sherbert/chocolate covered ice cream bars that puts Klondike bars to shame...try some other pies too!

If you count Hannaford, Shaws, Stop & Shop, Whole Foods and lots of local farmstands and butcher shops the PieGuy is a winner! For the past eight years they been voted best pie in New Hampshire by readers of NH Magazine.

We've had his pies. They are good, but I'm looking for a more homemade style. Has anyone tried the pies at the Shaker Village in Canterbury?

Lefty -- thanks, we will have to stop in and try those out. :)

Mom's have always been the very best! Homemade crust that is soft and not burned but sturdy enough to grab a slice and go without a plate and it still soaks up some juice! Just the right combo of fresh apples, spice etc that it doesn't leave the crust while you eat it on the run or under a mountain of ice cream!

Damn this is making me HUNGRY as a Bear!;)

What sort of figures are we talking here regarding the carbon footprint for the life cycle of each pie?

Also, I thought apple pie was quite un-American. Guess not, huh? :D

are you having an apple pie wedding cake?
... or, planning a food fight?

More locally the best apple pie, actually a mixed berry apple crisp, that I've found is the "365" pie from Whole Foods. Wholesome ingredients, too, compared to most store pastries. Not as good as my grandmother's but then, she used crisco in the dough and probably greased the pie plate with chicken fat.

I will second the Northland Diary Bar. Their fresh berry pies are great (they have fresh raspberry pies this time of year. Not sure of their apple pie but its worth the trip to try it out.

Of course there is the pie lady in Bethel another possiblity (just down the road from Sunday River Brewing)

Riverstones in Conway.

White Mountain Cider Company in Glen.
(try the cider doughnuts too!)

Good luck.

Don't forget Riverstones! They are my favorite bakery outside of the North End... for sweets.

For breads it is a hard choice, so many great bakeries in Portland!

And of course our own little village bakery in north conway.

dang, now i am hungry...

How about the Pie lady south of Grafton Notch on Route 26 by Old Speck, but then that's probably just out of your range...

Then I guess the Noonmark Diner is also out of your range too. :D

MMMM, cider doughnuts...

Jay
