The BEST map for the Whites is, hands-down, the Washburn. Accept no substitutes. But, yes, it only covers the Presidential Range.

To those two excellent maps I would add the new map of the Waterville Valley area, which also has XC ski trails. The latter can be useful, today I used the Pipeline XC ski trail to do Tecumseh from Depot Camp, adding 0.8 miles (each way) and 250 feet of elevation gain.Kevin Rooney said:A couple of 'sub-maps' of the Whites I like are the ones put out by the Wonalancet and Randolph Mountain Clubs for their respective trail maintenance areas.
OMG, say it ain't so! I have the 1990 and 1996 versions - it took me quite awhile to get used to them until I realized you just pretended you were standing on the top of Mt Adams, looking toward Randolph ... after that, everything falls into place naturally.peakbagger said:...They also made a radical change and oriented it so that North is at the top of the map!.

As an AMC member I think it cost $12 for the year. It allows you to create and print out color maps. Custom routes can be created and the mileage of various segments can be displayed. Since I'm up there often, it's worth it to me.
It also shows total distance and elevation gain for a custom route (based on existing trails.) And to ice the cake you can get an overlay of the route on google earth. Nothing like a real visualization of your flats, gains and losses and tree-lines. Makes me want to get off this computer right now!
