I want to take some friends out to enjoy the fall foilage and was wondering if anyone would like to volunteer their opinion as to what peaks in the Whites offer the best panoramic views? They are all experienced hikers so anything would be an option.

I climbed Isolation monday via Rocky Branch Tr etc. I was pleasantly suprised at the foliage views, especially looking east towards the Wildcats and the Carters and south into Conway. also the trail itself passes through like three completely different forests that are all in full color. Great Day!!

The BONDS

Last year during peak foliage I took a friend on her first ever backpacking trip to do the Bonds and that was my all time best foliage hike ever so I will say, do the Bonds . . . spot cars and go from Zealand Rd to Lincoln Woods . . .

Flat: into Zealand Notch from the Zealand Trail, then across on the Ethan Pond Trail to Thoreau Falls. In the notch, you end up in an open area at the foot of Whitewall with great views.

Climbing: into Zealand Notch from the Zealand Trail then up the Twinway past the hut to the Zeacliff lookout. From the cliffs you have the full panorama of Zealand Notch all the way to Carrigain and the Bonds.

Easy climbing: the Welch-Dickey loop never fails to impress with extensive open ledges with wide views. The foliage was already turning to some magnificent reds and yellows this past weekend.

So many more possibilities, but those pop into my mind first.

One note: Zealand Notch has a lot of birches, and tends to be golden. The area around Welch-Dickey has a lot of maples and there were many bright reds. You may want to take foliage species into consideration.

I think I am leaning towards Hight or Bondcliff. The last time I went up Bondcliff I couldn't see more than ten feet due to the fog and I keep promising myself I would return in good weather. Hight on the other hand has such an outstanding view of Mt Washington and the surrounding peaks without the crowds.

Mousilauke is one of the first things I see each morning as I wake up so I usually reserve that peak for when the urge to get up high and take a look around is too much to resist. As to Maine, just too far to go this weekend, but it's on my list.

Saturday is looking good weather wise so I think that is the day!

My new avatar is courtesy of our esteemed web master. I'll need to be more careful at these gatherings in the future..........

Yes, he caught me with horns on but not with my pants down, remember this! That means I can still run for congress if I feel like it in the near future :p
