I'm thinking about a weekend trip, hiking from North Adams (or maybe the Pine Cobble Road trail head in Williamstown) to Bennington via the Long Trail and then biking back to my car. Not sure if I'd try to lock and conceal my bike near the trail head or find some safer place in Bennington to leave it and then hitch to Bennington.

How challenging would the bike trip down Rt. 7 be? Would an alternate route be better (e.g Morgan to South Stream to....?)

I'd say that Route 7 is about your only real choice for biking between Bennington and Williamstown. I don't know of any real alternatives.

I'll recommend following Rt. 9 west into Bennington, taking a left at the light and following that road (right at the fork) more or less past the trout hatchery into Pownal. You'll eventually meet Rt. 7 at the top of the hill where there's a wide shoulder to ride on. Take a left just before crossing the Hoosac River and you'll return to the Pine Cobble trailhead.

Here it is: http://www.mapquest.com/maps/bennington+vt/

Follow S. Branch to South Stream Rd. to Barber Hill Rd.
