Books for the holidays

Anyone have suggestions for outdoors oriented / hike/camp holiday books - both to read and for gifts?

I read 'Forest and Craig' 2-3 years ago (excellent history), and last year, 'Monsters of the North Woods' (which turned out to be a history of bigfoot sightings in VT and Lake George).

Any comment would be appreciated.
 
Two come to mind. Haunted Hikes in New Hampshire by Marianne O’Connor, and Our Mountains Trips v.1-2 edited by Ben and Jane English.
 
From the Adirondack side of things

I really liked "At The Mercy of the Mountains" by Peter Bronski.

If you like more humorous accounts of the Adirondack backwoods, try the two books by Larry Weill, "Excuse Me, Sir... Your Socks Are On Fire" and the newer one, "Pardon Me, Sir...There's A Moose In Your Tent."

And then there's the classic Patrick F. McManus books, very very funny. His website is being re-designed currently, so no link.

Those are a few of my latest favorites. Hope you find something you like!
 
Steve Smith's latest NH 4,000 footer book would be a good gift!

I second "Our Mountain Trips" both one and two. AMAZING stories, especially if your familiar with the White Mountains... Nothing like the days when you rode a horse and buggy from Boston to the Whites for four days to just to hike Chocorua...

New England Logging

A book I very much enjoyed was Tall Trees, Tough Men by Robert Pike. It's available through Amazon. A similar book is Fran Belcher's Logging Railroads of the White Mountains which I haven't personally read but have heard good things about.

Either of these books could compliment any New England hike with the background they provide on the logging history of our mountains. A hike in the Pemigewasset, for example, can be much more meaningful after reading one of these books.

I positively LOVE those books!!!
It's the strangest thing and I have never done this before with any book. I read only 2-4 paragraphs each morning because I want to savor it. I don't want it to end, and when it does I will go on to the second one and then do it all over again.
It's how I start each day. VFTT, ROT, Our Mountain Trips, and Starbucks. These people are such an inspiration and to be transported back to that time and experience their journey is such a privilege and a blessing.

In another thread, someone mentioned the recently-published "Fallen Giants: A History of Himalayan Mountaineering". I recently read this book and would highly recommend it to those who enjoyed Forest and Crag. This book has prompted me to start reading a few of the expedition accounts, which also make for pretty interesting reading.

Question: Does anyone know where one could purchase a new copy of Forest and Crag in the greater Boston area? It looks like they are only available used online. I think I've seen copies in EMS before...

I think I saw a copy at one of REI Reading, EMS Newton, or EMS Acton within the past week.

Someone gave me "Classic Climbing Stories" Lyons Press, Edited by Kerry and Cameron Burns, for reading this summer as I recuped from major surgery.
These are all first ascents of the highest mountains. Not easy reading because of the period English, but amazing stories about what those explorers went through in those days.
