You are NOT allowed to hike on the ski trails. Trails can be accessed from Lafayette place or the Cannon ski area. (depending on the trail). At Cannon Mountain the trail is along a gravel road to the left of the main entrance.

Or Wildcat

Plenty of long grassy slopes on Wildcat ski area, another benefit is the wild strawberries that are ripe this time of year :) Polecat is a good trail, avoid Catapult!

ONce I slid all the way down a expert slope, that grass is slippery, beats walking.

Waterville Valley might interest you. I came down from Tecemseh on the steepest ski trail I could find back in November, a double black diamond called "True Grit". Nobody gave me any trouble about hiking on the ski trails.

I was at Cannon today for a meeting with the folks from the State. This question actually came up.

It is in deed illegal to Hike the Cannon Ski trails... but I know a certain someone who has written permission from the state to do so.... if you wanna tag a long ;)

John - you know that we will be there for you, but please don't tell us we have to do all 48 with you just to hike on Cannon's ski runs! :>

Congrats on the very big news that you are just hinting at here. Obviously you put together a good plan that met with the approval of the State of NH - very impressive. We look forward to July 2006!!!!

You can also hike Loon. A very nice detour can be made over to Loon Pond and the South Peak, starting along a cut trail below the knob that the tram terminus is on. They cut several ski trails to the west of the main area but were stymied by opposition. The paths in that area make an interesting nature walk, and you can even descend an old road into town.

Plus, there's a path from near the summit that goes towards Black Mountain that I haven't explored yet. We climbed Scar Ridge from Loon once - not too bad, but very balsamy.
