Check this out. This is a beta, comments and corrections welcome...

Other locators are possible... :D

And Thanks to Mavs!

EDIT: Map is working now, but the links are just placeholders. Balsam Lake (the Western most peak) is a working prototype.

Hi Tom, the map is loading fine for me in Safari. Looks good.... any plans on adding/marking the Catskill 100 peaks. :D

Tom, nice to see the cluster of Catskill Peaks. I know this may be the nature of the beast, but it would be nice to see the peak names without having to click on the balloon -- can they show or just show when hovering? That would make it easier to find the peaks.

Nice job on the map, Tom.

It looks to me like the little name bubbles point to the valleys rather than the mountains.
That is somewhat an optical illusion on satellite maps. Because we live in the northern hemisphere, there is more sunlight on the southern slopes while the northern slopes will appear to be in shadow. That is just the opposite of the shading done on relief maps which put the shading on the visually lower (south) side of mountain slopes -- as it seems more natural for light to come from above rather than below. Consequently on satellite maps valleys look like mountains, and mountains look like valleys.

Yeah, what he said! :D It took me a while to figure that out, but I'm sure the data is correct. After all, I got it from Mark! :D

As for the text and hovering:

More text can be added, but I don't know the maximum length. What else do you want to see? Height is one obvious thing I guess. Not too difficult.

Hovering: Don't know. This was a hack job, so if anyone knows how to do that, I'd love to hear from them.

Mr. Metsky ???

Not to Hijack Tom's thread, but Tom asked if he could use an similar map list I did earlier for his Catskill. I certainly didn't mind. Not sure I ever posted my original ADK100 map on here, so perhaps, with Tom's permission, I will.

Now there are two "google" interactive Peak Locator maps avaiable.

- Tom's great Catskils Map - http://viewsandbrews.com/ny/catskill35.html
- Mavs Original ADK100 interactive map - LOCATED HERE

There are some other pretty cool things you can do with these maps too. Here is a LINK to updates to that map and possible enhancements (post #25).

Great work Tom, looks good.

No problem and thanks. Now that I've done this one, whipping up another one would not be too hard. You basically just need the names and coordinates for each summit.

I also like the enhancements you sketched out over an ADKHPs. Now, if I just had a little spare time! :D

Ok, I can now do 'hover', Balsam Lake is an example. Balsam Lake also has a (non-working right now) link to more information and image file that will display when you click the balloon.

I also used Tom's and Tim's maps as a guide however mine are generated on the fly with php (and a sql database). So if you want locator maps for any of the other lists check these out:

ADK46: http://www.speeddent.com/hiking.php?map=adk46
NH48: http://www.speeddent.com/hiking.php?map=nh48
NE115: http://www.speeddent.com/hiking.php?map=ne115
ADK Fire Tower Challenge: http://www.speeddent.com/hiking.php?map=ftc

I'm also working on a version where people can check off a list of which peaks they have hiked for a certain list and it will generate the code for you (all it requires is your own website, and a free google maps key) with hiked mountains green, and un-hiked mountains red.

Awesome!

Just so you know, http://RocksOnTop.com (referral required to join) has such a feature already, not exactly as you state, but very nice.

Another Catskill Locator Map

The link below is a direct link to a map created with Google Maps for the Catskill 3500 peaks only. Each peak is "clickable" and most have pictures and a link to my website at www.catskillhiker.com to a page about that peak. These pages have a display of tracks from my GPS on embedded Google maps.

Catskill 35s

The next link is to one that "wraps" many hiking locations into one map. The good part is that you can turn on and off different sets of points on the map. The bad part is that you will have to add the map to your Google maps for it to work.

Hiking Locations

These can be troublesome at times. Let me know how they work.
